Review Summary

I have had a Coolpix P510 for several years and really liked it. When I read the reviews for the Coolpix P900, I was really interested and the camera has not disappointed. I like the longer zoom range that has allowed me to get some great bird and animal pictures. The picture resolution appears to be the same, whether at 24mm or 2000mm. I really like being able to quickly change the aperture and shutter speed settings using the Command Dial and the Multi-Selector Dial. I also designated the Function Button to control ISO settings. So all exposure controls are right at my fingertips and easily adjusted. I also like the eye sensor that automatically switches from the LCD screen to the viewfinder when I bring the camera up to my face. I prefer to shoot using the viewfinder as it helps to minimize camera shake and automatically turning off the LCD screen saves the battery. The camera is heavier than expected which makes it a little harder to minimize camera shake for hand-held shooting. The P900 also has a limited depth of field control. The range is from f/2.8 to f/8, depending on the zoom setting. It is difficult to get a good bokeh for portraits and close-up nature shots. I have been having trouble finding a lens hood to use with this camera. Without a lens hood, you get a lot of flare when shooting in bright light conditions and have to be careful not to shoot toward the light source. In summary, I am very happy with my purchase of the Coolpix P900. It is a quality point-and-shoot camera The focal range allows me to switch from landscapes to bird/animal subjects without having to change lenses. It is a good value for the money.

First off I love the zoom range! I have seen the moon, Jupiter, Venus, Mars, and Saturn! My only complaint is the autofocus doesn't always work (lags). And the photos aren't always the best quality overall. It has a small sensor which would explain the picture quality. But with that said I will buy Nikon products in the future. Keep up the great work guys.

I had in mind to upgrade my dslr & we went into Best Buy talking about upgrading my D3100 and the gentleman told me about the new one and then he mentioned the P900 and I went to look at it and handle it and right then I knew this was the one. While I am still learning the camera, I am loving the settings and options...To me there is a learning curve between the 2 but I am very please with my purchase!! Love that you don't have to have different lenses

I was looking for a point and shoot camera with a good zoom. I"ve been a Nikon fan cense my pro days. I was tired of changing lenses. I had zeroed in on the 600B in the stores. It had a good zoom and nice features at a good price. I was ready to buy and decided to check it out online first, glad I did. Found the 900P on the Nikon site and compared it to the 600B. I decided the eye viewer / and more advanced display screen, plus the more powerful zoom, plus the multitude of shooting options from full manual control to abundant scene settings, and easy to set the flash, timers, ISO, and Macro settings were worth the extra $200 over the 600B. Had a big bright full Moon recently and got to try the Moon scene setting. The zoom was incredible and the exposures were excellent. This may be the best camera I have ever owned.

for a point and shoot I think it does a real good job. I like having a manual mode for doing table tops and such. The DSLR's have sort of found a forever home in the darkroom.

I have had my CoolPix P900 for a two years. I love the camera, pictures are great, videos are great. Lighting on video inside dark areas require the flash up the entire time. The one thing that is a HUGE design flaw and would have been a deal breaker had I known prior to my purchase, is the Tripod connection. The tripod connector began to crack around the screw after one year and the next thing you know, it snaps off because the camera is heavy and the tripod connection is not centered in the middle of the camera to distribute the weight properly. It is installed right where the camera splits, so the weight is one-sided. If you use a Monopod orTripod often, this camera may not be for you.

Good point and shoot camera. Great for travel. Excellent moon shots. The thing I dislike most is the up down focus switch.... I never seem to get good clear pictures when using the camera in manual focus mode. At this point I would buy the P1000 with the focus ring. Yes, I know the 1000 weighs more but I would prefer it with better options.

I am a Nikon user and have a D800 with an 80-400 mm lens that I use for bird watching. One of the issues is that my camera with lens was very heavy while out in the field. A friend recommended trying the COOLPIX P900. It was so light and the pictures are incredible. I never thought I would be pleased with a "point and shoot" but I am!

I bought this as a quick grab travel camera to use instead of dragging around one of my DSLR cameras. I love the features of this camera! That zoom, are you kidding me? And, it turns on quickly and is really easy to use! If you have other Nikon cameras, you will find the menu and features very easy to navigate. Definitely recommend!

I have been a photographer for more than 45 years. At the age of 67, I no longer want to haul lenses, camera bodies, filters, flashes, etc . I want to throw a camera in a bag and go. The Coolpix P900 gives you great pics, every focal length you could want and ease of use. It still allows you the ability to go manual and create special effects. Throw in it’s ability to shoot great movies and you’ve got the perfect camera. I added a tulip hood, a UV and a digital Polarizer and it’s a perfect carry camera. Only downside is the lack of available accessories and a hotshoe.

I've only recently acquired the Coolpix P900. So far the telephoto feature has been outstanding. I'm still getting used to it since I primarily own Cannons. I do love the wide angle and telephoto features bundled in one package and not having to change lenses. From my backyard I zoomed in on a bird at the top of a tree 2 houses away. This was hand held and I was very impressed with how clear the image turned out.

My friend bought this camera for an ape safari in Africa. We brought it to my house to learn how to use it so we walked down to the lake where the Bald Eagles live. They are roughly 300 yards away so even a great camera can't get close enough. Not anymore. The lease on this camera is incredible. I can even do a hand held shot of the moon. I have taken many photos with this camera and can get so close without disturbing the wildlife so they stay and I just take tons of photos.. Love it!!!

We bought the camera for a bird-watching trip to Trinidad and Tobago. In my first 10 minute efforts to take pictures in the back yard (on the river) I managed to get a good shot of the Great Blue Heron with a big fish. I thought it would be hard to get used to the camera but was off to a good start. My next efforts were at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands near West Palm Beach. Some of these pictures were really amazing. The American Bittern was amazing because they're hard to find. The Dancing Great Blue Herons were amazing because I'd never seen them dance. The Snowy Egret was amazing because of the beautiful breeding plumage. And the Baby Wood Storks were amazing because I'd never seen them before. My second attempt to take pictures were much better than I expected. Many people were there with their large, very heavy cameras with long lenses. They wanted to know about my camera. I let then hold it to see how light it was. At least 5 or 6 photographers went home planning to check out my camera, thinking of buying one for themselves - especially for traveling. I'm looking forward to taking more and even better pictures with a little practice. My only problem is that my husband keeps wanting to use the camera too. Note that we use Picasa to crop and improve lighting on our pictures.

For photos this camera is great! Low light isn't the best, but all others are very nice. The zoom is incredible! My disappointment came when I did a two videos of two of my son's high school band concerts. The audio was absolutely horrible!!! It was very distorted. Reading reviews others have had the same problem. I So, if you want a great camera for photography, buy this one. If you plan on doing much in the way of video look elsewhere.

I bought this for my boyfriend, he is just getting into photography and wanted something with a good zoom so he could get bird shots. We were both blown away at how well it does zoom. The moon photos he took were awesome! Great camera for hobby beginners

What a great addition to my gear! As an amateur, my wildlife images are primarily taken using a Tamron 150-600 lens. This Nikon bridge camera has a ton of reach with many creative settings I've yet to try. It's light weight and easy to operate, especially on auto, but it's nice to have the option to use manual settings. My biggest complaint is the small sensor...it's not very good in low light and it's sluggish. As an entry level camera loaded with creative settings and a 24-2000 lens, I feel it has been well worth the purchase price.

This camera was a gift for Christmas from my girlfriend. It has exceeded all my expectations and I can't believe all its capabilities. I enjoy taking pictures of the moon and am amazed at the definition of the craters and mountains visible on the surface. Also, it's an amazing camera for wildlife photography as I've taken many, many pictures of birds and love the detail down to the individual feather. I'd recommend this for anyone wanting to get into photography!

I’m still new with mine but have used similar cameras. I love the zoom part and am still learning the other nuances. The weight was hard to get used to at first so when I want to zoom way out I use a tripod. The photos are amazingly shap at far distances. The ducks in my photo below were about the size of my little fingernail from where I took the shot.

I've had the COOLPIX P900 for a few months. I am an amateur photographer and have basically used a pocket camera until now. I have only used the automatic features, so I can't give any advice concerning the manual mode. I purchased the Coolpix because I was going to Peru and would be taking pictures in many different settings, including the Amazon Jungle. I anticipated needing greater magnification and I was right. I now wish I had this camera a long time ago. If you want a camera that will allow you to take good quality pictures from a distance while having the camera in automatic mode, this camera is for you. While I found the camera easy to use, the 2 pound plus weight took me a while to get used to. All in all, I am very satisfied with the COOLPIX 900P. Tip: Buy ONLY Nikon electronic accessories if you can, especially the batteries, an external battery charger (you may not need one) and a shutter remote button (tripod shots). Read the manual 1st, at least for the features you will be using. Do it and you may save some headaches and money. Better yet, download the manual before you buy and determine what you need. The Nikon batteries lasted me for days of all day shooting. Always have at least 1 backup battery.

I have owned the Nikon Coolpix P900 for about 3 weeks and have loved it. really happy with zoom
By birdwatcher
I am not a professional. I recently picked up birding and wanted to upgrade my Nikon D40 to a better zoom camera that could hold more than a 2GB memory card. I was wavering between buying a nicer zoom lenses or a new camera. Every lenses that I liked was well over ($) so I thought I would give the P900 a try. I am really happy with my choice. The weight is also a plus - it is light enough that it goes unnoticed in my backpack on a hike. I also really appreciate how seamlessly it connects with...

The Nikon Coolpix P900, a small-sensor compact digital camera with a whopping 83x optical zoom lens and a 35mm equivalent reach of 24-2000mm, the world's longest-ranging built-in zoom lens. Packed with features, the P900 also offers full 1080p HD video, built-in Wi-FI with NFC and GPS, the ability to operate the camera remotely from a smartphone or tablet and a 16MP sensor. A flip-out, 3-inch 921k resolution monitor lets you shoot low or high angles, and the high-resolution EVF lets you shoot at eye level. With its rich feature set and unprecedented zoom range, the P900 should be a very appealing choice for travel photography.
Let’s take a minute to talk about who the Nikon Coolpix P900 is best suited for. The P900 is the only super-zoom camera with an insane 83x optical telephoto lens that can shoot subjects at a jaw dropping 2m focal distance. The P900 is a bridge camera meaning better image quality than a bargain point-and-shoot or smartphone, but without the option of interchangeable lenses. The P900 has a lot of bang for the buck as an intermediate hobbyist’s camera to shoot everything from macro photography to detailed images of the moon.
Read MoreThe P900 has an intuitive control layout with a snapback zoom button and a wide selection of scene modes, filter effects, special effects, and macro options. The COOLPIX P900 also features multiple Mode options in accordance with subject's size and position. Nikon says the camera's lag time is a mere 0.12 seconds at the wide-angle position and 0.75 seconds at full telephoto extension, good news for sports photographers. Nikon claims its optical vibration reduction adds up to 5 stops, a necessity when shooting at long focal lengths.
With 2,000mm equivalent focal length, subjects barely visible with the naked eye can fill your frame. And if they don't, Dynamic Fine Zoom, an enhanced digital zoom effectively doubles that reach—to a 4,000mm equivalent! If you lose sight of your subject while zoomed in, press the Snap-Back Zoom button for a quick zoomed-out view. Find your subject again and then release the button—the COOLPIX P900 will zoom right back in. The whole time, 5.0 stops* Dual Detect Optical VR improves VR performance using enhanced detection accuracy to help keep your photos sharp and your videos steady.

Relive the excitement of your travels in a whole new way.
