Sony SPK-AS1 Action Cam Waterproof Case

I can't say much about the underwater quality of this case, but it holds up well to impact. I do outdoor work, mostly tree work, and was using my action cam to record some tree felling. Unfortunately my case fell out of my pocket by a wood chipper. A fairly sizable log fell on top of my camera before I realized it. The case broke, but protected my camera so that's great! A negative would be the quality of the yellow clip that seals the case. Mine came broken (and I broke the rest of the case the next day so no returns for me :[). I was able to super glue the yellow tab together though and it regained functionality.

I've bought a brand new hdr -as 15 in february 2014 .in a store ,and yesterday on my first diving ,waterproof case failed to keep the water out and my cam on 20m of depth ended up soaking wet and dead . I want to know what to do now ? DOes the warranty covers that type of damage ? I'm really disapointed ....

I have used this with my HDR AS100V to go diving. I fitted the flat door to the front. I have taken it to 40m and have some stunning underwater footage. The case works well although you cannot adjust the camera underwater; just turn it on and off. This case and the action cam make an excellent underwater video system; very clear and steady pictures; super colours and fairly good sound. The video has been down graded for the internet - looks fantastic in HD quality!

This case is designed to allow your Action Cam to shoot under water. There's one big problem. The underwater video is completely out of focus. And here's the reason. Water has a greater index of refraction than air, meaning that the water bends light rays more than air does. This does not happen if you use the case out of the water, because the air on both sides of the lens cover has the same index of refraction, allowing light rays to pass through straight in line. But once there is water on the outside, the higher index of refraction of the water against the curved surface creates a lens effect, which causes the light rays to bend and creatie an image that is out of focus. If the camera lens had an automatic focus mechanism, it could compensate somewhat for the bended light. This camera lens, however, has one fixed focus, and so it can not compensate. The only solution to this problem is for Sony to redesign the front lens cover with a flat surface on both sides so the light won't bend in air or in water.

The SPK-AS1 box claimed to secure underwater shooting. In fact it does keep water out OK, yet the image is severely out of focus. In fact that gadget spoiled my short vacation.... Should have taken my old camera with me...

I havent tested it underwater yet, but I've had it hooked onto the outside of my car for a drive around the neighborhood. Worked well. I mention that it is bulky, but that's the camera's fault. It is a funny shape unlike some that I've seen that are cubes. I'm a sony guy, so that's what I get!
