Building upon the fundamentals of the brand’s full-frame mirrorless system, Sony has just announced a brand new member of the Alpha family: the Sony a7R IV.
Presented this morning at a press conference in New York City, Sony’s latest full-frame mirrorless camera features the world’s first 35mm full-frame 61.0MP image sensor, 15 stops of enhanced dynamic range, real-time AF tracking for stills and movies (for humans and animals), and more.
Key Features:
- World’s first 35mm full-frame 61.0 MP back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor
- 15-stop enhanced dynamic range
- High-speed continuous shooting at up to 10 fps with full AF / AE tracking
- 567 focal-plane phase-detection AF points, with 74% coverage
- Real-time Eye AF for movie recording
- 5.76 million dot UXGA (Ultra-XGA) OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder
- Upgraded connectivity and operability, now including high-speed Wi-Fi support, wireless PC remote connectivity
- 4K movie recording, S-Log3, HDR
- Completely redesigned grip for improved holding
- Dual UHS-II card slots
- Upgraded dust and moisture resistance.
61.0 Megapixels:
The brand new 61.0-megapixel Exmor R sensor brings added depth and dimension, while the back-illumination allows for low noise and high sensitivity. The a7R IV includes roughly 1.5 times more resolution than its predecessor (Sony a7R III), and reproduces textures and details even more accurately. The camera also features a 15-stop dynamic range at low sensitivities that adds details from shadow to highlight, and accurately captures portrait skin tones and nature colors.
The camera’s high-speed continuous shooting reaches up to 10fps while enabling full AF/AE tracking for about seven seconds in full-frame mode, and boosts that up to three times as long in APS-C.
A low-vibration shutter reduces blur, all due to a new shutter unit that boasts a fast-response coreless motor. The 61.0MP sensor is also supported by the 5-axis image stabilization, in both movies and in stills.
The a7R IV also includes a brand new UXGA (Ultra-XGA) OLED Tru-Finder that has 5.76 million dots, that enhances detail, contrast, and brightness.
An Improved Look:
An completely redesigned grip allows for improved holding and a more secure hold, and a magnesium alloy body keeps the unit durable and lightweight. Dual UHS-II slots provide additional memory storage capacity.
The a7R IV also has enhanced dust and moisture resistance and improved weather sealing around the seams, battery, and media compartments to keep moisture out.
New Shooting Features:
A new 16-image Pixel Shift Multi Shooting feature uses the cameras IBIS to create an image of a 16-photo composite at a whopping 240 megapixels.
A total of 567 focal-plane phase-detection AF points cover 74% of the area, and 425 contrast AF points. The camera also includes a Focus Priority mode that brings AF to low-light conditions, and producing more detailed and reliable images from dark scenes.
Moviemaking Controls:
On the filmmaking side, the a7R IV has full-frame and Super 35mm formats for 4K movie recording, and has full pixel readout at Super 35mm mode without pixel binning. The camera has a Fast Hybrid AF system for movies, and Sony has also added the Eye AF features from the a9 and a7R III and added full continuous eye autofocus in video, giving users added control while shooting movies, even giving the option of selecting the right or left eye in humans.
Added Productivity:
Wireless connectivity and tethered shooting also get a boost, and the a7R IV supports 2.4GHz or 5 GHz WiFi, and is compatible with Sony’s Imaging Edge “Remote” software for quick sharing of images. A built-in USB Type-C connecter gives even quicker data transfer while tethered, which Sony notes is up to twice as fast as the a7R III.
Brand new audio functionality includes a digital audio interface that has a premium digital studio signal from the microphone to the camera. A new multi-interface hot shoe is now included on the camera, and Sony has also introduced a new ECM-B1M shotgun microphone that has an analog-to-digital converter.
The Sony a7R IV will be available for preorder starting July 18, 2019 at 10AM EST for .
Additional accessories include the Vertical Grip VG-C4EM (), a XLR Mic Adaptor Kit XLR-K3M (), and Shotgun Microphone EC-B1EM ().
