Quasar Science is a household name on sets across the world. Lighting technicians and filmmakers rely on the company’s tools in order to create art with unlimited possibilities. In addition to helping creators achieve their vision, there’s still a great deal of new and exciting ideas on the horizon. This includes the recently announced Quasar LED tube lights.: Crossfade X, Rainbow 2, and Double Rainbow.
Some of Hollywood’s favorite lighting tools are from Quasar, which are known for their ease of use, durability, and relatively low price tag. Furthermore, Quasar lights are well-known and recognized for their tubular design and highly-ranked color score. Here’s what we know so far about the new Crossfade X, Rainbow 2, and Double Rainbow lights.
Rainbow 2
The Rainbow 2 (R2) is the new and improved version of the original Quasar Rainbow. For motion picture and content creation, the R2 is the premier linear LED that adds a multitude of new features, while keeping the same sleek, sturdy low-profile shape. It has high RGB color saturation, and multiple pixels that maintain super smooth, flicker-free dimming. The Ossium Mounting System (OMS) allows for endless rigging possibilities that were previously impossible. The R2 is the ultimate workhorse for lighting actors and environments. All Rainbow 2s have multi-pixel control for the cleanest color.
Powered by AC or DC power input, this linear LED light provides amazing data connectivity. In addition, it has DMX cat 5/cat 6 ports, wireless DMX by Lumen Radio, and bluetooth. The R2 comes in three lengths at different price points: two feet, four feet, and eight feet. There’s also a two feet and four feet quad kit available.
Key Features:
- Color Control – The perceptually distributed color palette allows artists to control lighting instinctively. Spectral Control gives artists control over a color’s spectral fingerprint.
- Color Science – More than one billion colors can be calibrated by RGBX Spectral Science Color Engine.
- Pixelation – The Rainbow 2 produces more realistic animation thanks to its higher pixel count and greater control
- Mounting – OSSIUM Mounting System seamlessly integrates with industry-standard hardware for safer, faster, and more precise rigging.
- Connectivity – It has a built-in Ethernet Node expands data versatility.
Double Rainbow
The Double Rainbow (RR) Linear LED has two rows of RGBX pixels. This takes its animation and special effects capabilities even further. RR is elegant, compact, and packed with incredible features. The unique shape makes for a powerful light source that takes up little space, but never sacrifices color or output quality. Even though it’s twice as wide as standard T12 tubes, you’ll find it best used for studio lighting, process car work, or special lighting effects. With its vibrant saturated colors and intense white light, the end result is realistic lighting.
RR can be controlled with wired DMX or wireless DMX as well as Bluetooth. This eliminates the need for data boxes, receivers, or transmitters. Use the built-in AC power supply or operate it with DC battery power for use wherever and whenever you want. The Ossium Mounting System rigging adapts to any condition.
RRs are available in two lengths: two feet and four feet. A four foot double kit and two foot double kit are also available.
Key Features:
- Double Wide Design – It’s unique, two-row design produces unmatched flexibility.
- Color Control – The industry’s first perceptually distributed color palette utilizes Just Noticeable Difference for instinctive light control. Spectral Control, a new technical and creative tool, enables output to be desaturated for color-matching 3rd party fixtures.
- Color Science – More than one billion colors can be calibrated by RGBX Spectral Science Color Engine.
- Pixelation – The double-height produces more realistic, lighting effects animation.
- Mounting – OSSIUM Mounting System seamlessly integrates with industry-standard hardware for safer, faster, and more precise rigging.
- Connectivity – It’s equipped with both an Ethernet Node and Network Switch.
Crossfade X
Crossfade X is the least expensive unit in the bunch. It has an aluminum frame that features a plastic diffuser around the bulb. The lamp is dimmable by using a wheel at the end of the lamp. It produces a balanced, flicker-free color spectrum at any color mix by blending a warm 2000K diode with a cool 6000K diode. One light can be used as a key light, three for a three-point setup, or ganged together for a larger light source. In addition, the Crossfade X can retrofit legacy Kino packages to make LED units compatible with dimmers and increase output and color quality. Because of its light weight, the fixture’s easy to handle, extremely portable, and easy to mount to a wall or ceiling with tape without fear of it falling.
The intelligent mounting and AC cabling accessories increase its versatility. A 120 volt AC power is required at just one end of the tube, reducing cabling needs. The Crossfade X is available in multiple sizes: two feet, four feet, and eight feet.
Key Features:
- Tunable White Light – It blends a warm 2,000K diode and a cool 6,000K diode for a balanced, flicker-free color spectrum at any color mix.
- Dimmable – It is compatible with most AC TRIAC dimming systems.
- Simple Operation – New on/off power switch and control dial allow for quick operation and easy adjustments.
- Low Profile – It can easily hide in small spaces or flush mount to walls or ceilings with tape.
- Light Weight – It’s extremely portable and has easy one-hand operation for endless rigging possibilities.
- Scalable – Stack them in columns or rows. Create large LED panels and arrays.
