Canon today introduced its new flagship compact digital camera, the DSLR-shaped Canon SureShot G1X Mark III. It’s the first Canon compact digital “point and shoot” camera to have an APS-C, and joins the Canon EOS M5 in featuring a 24MP APS-C sized sensor as well as an eye-level viewfinder housed in a pentaprism-shaped housing. But while the M5 is an interchangeable-lens model, the G1X Mark III sports a retractable, built-in 3x zoom lens, making it a more convenient choice for travelers.

Other than the lens, the G1X Mark III’s specifications are very similar to those of the Canon EOS M5.

  • 24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • 24-72mm (35mm equivalent) f/2.8-5.6 lens
  • ISO range 100-25,600
  • 1080p Video at up to 60 fps
  • Up to 9fps burst rate
  • 3-inch 1.04 million dot touch flip-out LCD monitor
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC
  • EVF with 2.36 million dot resolution
  • Dust and water resistant build

Low-Light Advantage

The main advantage of having a larger sensor is better image quality capabilities in low light, since the pixels are larger and therefore let in more light during exposure. the larger sensor lets Canon set an ISO range of 100-25,000. This, paired with Optical Image Stabilization and a maximum wide aperture of f/2.8 at the widest zoom setting (it drops down to f/5.6 as you zoom out) makes it possible to easily capture handheld still images in low light without a flash.

“Borrowed” DSLR Features

Canon also borrowed from its DSLR line Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which is said to provide very fast and smooth autofocus across nearly the entire focal plane, allowing quick focus on off-center subjects. Touch and Drag AF lets you quickly change focus on the touchscreen LCD monitor without taking your eyes off the EVF.

Continuous shooting (7fps in AF or 9fps with fixed focus) is as fast as a typical mid-range APS DSLR, and a Panoramic Shot Mode stitches together vertical or horizontal panoramas, and an intuitive Time Lapse Movies setting is available with controllable intervals.

As more compact cameras are being introduced built around APS sensors, it begs the question whether Canon and other DSLR makers are considering transitioning away from APS-based DSLRs in favor of using the sensor in mirrorless compacts, and focusing their DSLR lines on full-frame 35mm sensors.
