Walking through the Jacob Javits Convention Center’s main expo floor, we got a chance to get a quick first look at two of Canon’s most recently announced cameras for beginning photographers in the Canon EOS M-10 and those looking for an advanced point-and-shoot camera in the G5X. Both have a great feature set for photographers of all types in two very distinct camera bodies.

Canon G5X

The Canon G5X is an advanced compact camera (point-and-shoot) featuring a svelte design that fits comfortably in the hand and has plenty of features for intermediate to advance photographers including full manual controls including manual focusing and 14-bit RAW file handling.

Upon our brief time with the camera, we’re really impressed with the super bright 8.8-36.8mm f/1.8-2.8 (35mm equiv. 24-100mm) lens, bright EVF, and swivel screen for capturing images from unique angles and ease of use when shooting video. The zoom speed from its widest to tightest focal lengths transition quickly and smoothly without fear of the autofocus having to hunt. Even in the poor lighting on the convention floor, the Canon G5X rarely struggled finding its mark.

Senior ALC writer, Mason Resnick, pointed out the very fast autofocusing time that the G5X delivered with minimal write lag. Mason noted that the G5X feels like a strong contender for travel and street photographers looking for a compact camera that doesn’t sacrifice functionality for form. We look forward to a more in-depth review in the near future.

Canon EOS M-10

The most recently announced member to the EOS M family, the EOS M-10, is a great introduction to the world of interchangeable lens systems for beginners and intermediate photographers alike. Canon clearly put ease of operation to the forefront with the EOS M 10, opting for fewer dials and simple operation within the camera’s menu system. The EOS M 10 delivers quality images, minimal lag on write times, and the flexibility to shoot JPEG and RAW. Don’t be fooled by appearances alone, this camera is a beginner’s camera with lots of ceiling space to grow with you as a photographer.

The EOS M delivers a compact and attractive design, multiple color options, and the expandability to use EF lens (with an optional adapter).  With Canon’s M line, we love the emphasis on ease of use and looking forward to the development of native lenses for M mount system. It’s an exciting addition to the M line and sign of Canon’s dedication to innovating in the mirrorless category.

While you’re at the Canon booth make sure to check out their full line of EOS cameras including the EOS 5DS and 5DS-R (which we’ve covered here on ALC) as well as the wealth of lenses, underwater housings, and professional video cameras as well.
