Panasonic has just announced a firmware update for the LUMIX S5II and S5IIX cameras that is expected to enhance its capabilities and user experience. This update brings a host of new features to these popular models, which were first released in January 2023. With improvements such as Frame.io Camera to Cloud integration, AI-powered autofocus enhancements, video proxy recording, expanded video E-Stabilization, and pre-burst shooting, these cameras are set to become even more versatile tools for content creation.

Here’s what to know about the newest firmware update for the Panasonic LUMIX S5II and S5IIX cameras, which will be available to download on April 22, 2024.

Panasonic LUMIX S5II and S5IIX Firmware Update

About the Panasonic LUMIX S5II and S5IIX Cameras

The Panasonic LUMIX S5II and S5IIX cameras both come with a 24.2MP image sensor and 6.5 stops of in-camera image stabilization. These cameras quickly became a favorite among Panasonic photographers and videographers alike, thanks to unlimited 4k 60p video recording and 14+ stop V-Log/V-Gamut video.

Panasonic has also continued to invest in the LUMIX S5II and S5IIX ecosystem, including an array of newly released compatible L-mount lenses. These include the 28-200mm f/4-7.1 lens, 100mm f/2.8 lens, and 14-28mm f/4-5.6 lens — just to name a few.

New Firmware Update Features

The firmware version 3.0 for the LUMIX S5II and firmware version 2.0 for the LUMIX S5IIX offer five main features to improve the performance of the cameras. Here is what you need to know about each new feature:

Frame.io Camera to Cloud Integration

We’ve already seen Adobe’s Frame.io Camera to Cloud technology used in several new cameras and other production technology. Now, Panasonic LUMIX S5II and S5IIX users will also be able to reap the benefits. Camera to Cloud allows users to automatically upload, back up, and share photos and videos to their Cloud. This means content is added to the Frame.io upload queue while it’s being recorded. Frame.io can function using a Wi-Fi or USB-tethering-based internet connection.

Why is this helpful?

Frame.io Camera to Cloud integration makes it that much easier for Panasonic users to work quickly and efficiently with a larger team. Everyone with access can view the assets (via the Cloud) as soon as they are captured and provide real-time feedback!

Improved Auto-Focus

This firmware update to the Panasonic LUMIX S5II and S5IIX also brings new AI-powered technology to improve real-time auto-focus recognition. Many photographers who already use these cameras can attest that the Phase Hybrid autofocus was incredibly accurate to begin with. This firmware update just enhances the system— now capable of animal eye, car, and motorcycle recognition.

Why is this helpful?

For wildlife and action sports photographers, this improvement will prove invaluable. You’ll be able to track your subjects quicker and with more accuracy than ever before.

Video Proxy Recording

LUMIX S5II and S5IIX users can now record a low bit-rate proxy file when recording video. This will simultaneously record, lined to the original video, so it’ll be easier to deliver to post-production. It’s also possible to set REAL TIME LUT separately for the original video and proxy.

Why is this helpful?

A low-bit-rate proxy file will allow for a better workflow during data transfer and editing. It helps teams to seamlessly flow between production and post-production with ease.

Better Video E-Stabilization

The Panasonic LUMIX S5II and S5IIX already offered a Standard E-Stabilization (Video) function, which is capable of correcting camera shake when moving. Now, this firmware update will introduce the same function in High Mode. This will allow users to correct even more intense camera shake.

Additionally, a new perspective distortion correct feature will allow users to correct distortion that is often caused when working with a wide-angle lens.

Why is this helpful?

Run-and-run videographers will be able to correct camera shake — small and large — that are often introduced when shooting on the go. This will allow content creators to work more freely and experiment with their shots, knowing their camera is capable of enhanced EIS performance.

Pre-Burst Shooting

The Panasonic LUMIX S5II and S5IIX will be able to record bursts before shooting even begins, thanks to this newly introduced feature. Now, the camera will begin burst shooting the second the content creator half-presses the shutter button.

Why is this helpful?

Photographers no longer need to worry about missing a spontaneous shot. A simple half-press of the shutter will benefit any content creator shooting fast-moving subjects.

To summarize, the new firmware update for the Panasonic LUMIX S5II and S5IIX cameras represents a significant enhancement to these already impressive models. The newest features will prove to be invaluable for high-functioning production teams and run-and-gun solo shooters alike.
