Nikon mirrorless shooters now have a new telephoto lens to get excited about. Nikon just announced its release of the brand new NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S Lens. This is a great addition to the growing lineup of lenses designed for Nikon’s mirrorless cameras. The new Nikon 800mm lens isn’t just any regular 800mm either. It is the lightest 800mm lens Nikon has ever created.

For the photographer that needs even more range, this lens is compatible with the Nikon Z Teleconverter TC1.4x and the TC2.0x. This extends the range out to an incredible reach of 1120mm and 1600mm, respectively. The new lens comes equipped with vibration reduction and ergonomic controls, making this lens feel absolutely perfect to use. Let’s take a look at some of the key features of this Nikon 800mm lens.

Key Features of the Nikon 800mm Lens:

  • Focal length of 800mm (1120mm or 1600mm with Nikon teleconverters)
  • Minimum aperture of f/6.3
  • Compatible with the Nikon Z-Series cameras
  • Minimum focusing distance of 4.6m (15 ft)
  • 5.25 pounds, just over 15 inches long

Not only is the long focal length of this lens intriguing for telephoto photographers, but this lens is also incredibly lightweight and easy to carry. The secret is Nikon’s Phase Fresnel element, which requires fewer elements in lens construction while still maintaining excellent image quality. This will allow wildlife, sports, and aviation (to name a few) photographers to travel lighter, and faster. The light weight of the lens is also distributed nicely across the body. This makes smooth and accurate panning a breeze when handheld or on a tripod.

The Nikon 800mm lens also included vibration reduction up to 5.0 stops. Combine this with the light weight feature of this lens and that makes for a great telephoto lens to shoot handheld.

Lastly, Nikon’s new telephoto lens boasts ergonomic controls. This will make it easy for you to access all side buttons and rings without taking your eyes off the viewfinder. This lens has two customizable Fn buttons, a memory set button to set focus position, control ring, manual focus ring, and a focus limit switch for optimal focusing times.

Traditionally, many telephoto photographers would be bound to carrying around a heavy tripod to help stabilize their cameras while shooting. They were also forced to carry around huge lenses to reach their desired focal length. The NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S Lens helps to change the status quo.

The vibration reduction, light weight, and compatibility with Nikon’s already compact Z-series cameras will really allow you to move quickly. You can capture the telephoto shots you want all with a very small yet professional quality kit. Very few lenses on the market today boast as much reach with as great of portability as the NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S Lens for Nikon’s mirrorless Z-series cameras.
