Gaming controllers and computer peripherals come in many different shapes and sizes these days. Depending on what game you are playing, you will want to explore the options available to you. While a console controller may get the job done for flight simulation, nothing beats the feel of the actual controls. For space or fighter plane simulation, that is a HOTAS controller.

In this article we’ll be looking at the Logitech G Pro Flight X52 Pro Flight System, which is a HOTAS model. If you’re still using a traditional controller, or keyboard and mouse, for your flight simulation games, the x52 is a fantastic introduction to the world of HOTAS.

What does HOTAS mean?

“HOTAS” is an acronym for “Hands On Throttle and Stick.” This means one hand has control over your throttle for speed and the other controls your pitch, yaw, and roll. This differs from your traditional Yoke and Rudder Pedal system, which is commonly used for simulating single prop planes or commercial flights. HOTAS controllers are better for simulating the combat experience of operating a fighter jet or a sci-fi spaceship.

Key Features of the Logitech x52

First and foremost is the price of entry and ability to acquire. If you are interested in flight combat simulation and are thinking of expanding your experience, then the X52 is a great starting point. Other systems on the market can cost hundreds of dollars more, or are on backorder for months. The x52 is an available and affordable option if you’re just starting to dip your toe and are unsure if you’ll enjoy the experience. Here are some of the key features of Logitech x52:

  • Affordable and available upgrade to traditional controller
  • Long-lasting quality
  • Z -axis control on flight stick
  • Customizable for more experienced users

The good news is, if you do try out the X52 and enjoy it, there’s no need to upgrade. This particular controller has been around for a while. It is tried and tested. Also, it’s not uncommon for people to have been using their same controller for 10+ years.

Z-Axis Rotation

There are some newer controllers that offer more knobs and toggle switches for a user-friendly in-game customization options. Although, there is one thing I’ve seen lacking on some competitor’s flight sticks — the lockable Z-axis rotation for controlling yaw. It may seem like a small feature, especially if you’re someone with a full setup with pedals for yaw. But, if you’re like me and looking for a casual simulation experience, the Z rotation on the stick adds a fun dynamic. For those that don’t have a need for the Z-axis control on the flight stick, it is easily lockable with small pullout on the bottom of the stick.

As I mentioned, there are some newer options that have a modern and realistic design. However, I use my HOTAS for space simulation games. Therefore, the more sci-fi feel and design of the X52 feels right at home. I enjoy the ability to flip open the safety switch and press the button to arm my ship’s weapons. The LED buttons and toggle switches make it feel like it was pulled right out of a classic sci-fi movie.

Customizable for More Experienced Users

The X52 offers the option for quick and easy “plug and play” on many games. For example, Microsoft Flight Simulator is a game I play often. I was able to jump right into it with no further setup required. Other games that I look forward to trying out with the X52 that are also plug-and-play are DCS World, Star Citizen, and War Thunder.

However, if you have the experience or are interested in more customization, you can get more out of your X52. You can customize the mode switch on the stick using the Logitech software. This allows you to use macros for specific games and create multiple profiles for each game. There is also a Multi Function Display (MFD) on the trottle, which is something I look forward to experimenting with.

Final Thoughts

In summary, if you’re a fan of flight simulation and are looking to expand your experience, then you can’t go wrong with the Logitech X52. With the affordable price point, available stock, the additional immersion and entertainment, the X52 will be the perfect addition to your experience.
