How to Pick a Travel Photography Lens

How do you pick a travel photography lens? If you’re a photographer who shoots on the go, there are two main features you should consider when it comes to lenses. Focal length, weight, and size are key factors when picking a travel photography lens.

How to Pick a Versatile Travel Photography Lens

First, you should consider the lens’ versatility. Zoom lenses are far better for most travel photographers because they can capture an increased range compared to a prime lens. Most travel photographers aim to carry as few lenses as possible, but covering a wide range with just one or two lenses can help you capture better photos of the places you visit. Look for super-zoom lenses, where the lens covers 8x zoom or higher. Some of the most popular super-zoom’s on the market include focal lengths of 24-240mm, 28m-200mm, and even 18-400mm. These lenses function great as “walk-around” lenses, as you can leave them on your camera and capture nearly any image you could dream of with such a wide focal range.

Balance Versatility with Weight and Size

Additionally, travel photographers should consider the weight and size of the lens. Space and weight can come at a premium when fitting a suitcase or backpack. Even if your bag is under the airline’s required weight, consider the kind of travel photography you’ll be doing. Carrying around heavy camera gear while walking every day can take a toll on your body, so getting gear that is both compact and lightweight can be a huge bonus.

Consider these two factors together, and you’ll be able to find the best lenses for travel photography.

When traveling, it’s important to understand that you’ll oftentimes have to make compromises with your camera equipment. Still, with the right gear, you should have very few limitations when it comes to capturing great images with a camera kit that is both lightweight and compact.
