Two of the biggest challenges of astrophotography are focusing and color retention. When it’s pitch black outside, it can be difficult to focus on subjects, such as stars, that appear microscopic on your camera screen. Oftentimes, if you do achieve a sharp image, the color may not be as accurate or vivid, simply because most camera filters aren’t built to capture and process that spectrum of color.
The EOS Ra tackles these two problems head-on, offering 30x magnification in Live View shooting mode to allow for photographers to accurately zero in and focus on even the smallest of stars. The EOS Ra was also built with a modified camera filter, with roughly four times more transmission sensitivity towards hydrogen-alpha rays, allowing for more vivid, deep-red hues of the nebulae, and producing incredible results when shooting the Milky Way galaxy. All of this makes it an ideal camera for astrophotography enthusiasts.
In addition to stills, the EOS Ra also features 4K time-lapse capabilities, coupled with high ISO performance, so you can be sure to capture beautiful nighttime time-lapses of the stars and the Milky Way galaxy moving across the sky, recorded in beautiful clarity and detail. And with a vivid, Vari-angle LCD touchscreen, photographers will be able to compose and frame shots at any angle, to get the most unique perspective possible.
However, what makes the EOS Ra even more intriguing, is while it was built and designed as a camera for astrophotography, it still includes the performance and design features of the EOS R camera. With a 30.3-Megapixel, full-frame CMOS sensor and Digic 8 image processor, the EOS Ra produces stunning image results, day or night. In addition to its nighttime focusing features, the EOS Ra was built with the same Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus system as the EOS R, making it fast and accurate in the field.
The EOS Ra also features a built-in electronic view finder (EVF) with 3.69 million dots, similar to the EOS R, allowing for accurate focus of the night sky, even without the use of the high magnification 30x Live View function that the EOS Ra offers. And of course, the EOS Ra was built with the same lightweight, compact size and reliable durability that the EOS R series is known for, making the EOS Ra a trustworthy companion for astrophotographers, no matter where they roam.
The EOS Ra is definitely a camera that was designed and built for photographers who are serious about astrophotography and creating the best images and time-lapses of the night sky. It attacks the challenges of focusing and color retention head-on, with Live View 30x focus magnification and modified filter, enhanced for night sky photography. However, you also get the same high performance, features, and lightweight, compact, and durable camera body design as the EOS R, making the EOS Ra an exciting camera for the traveling photographer, and those who are looking to capture the magic and beauty of the skies above us.
