Canon XF 405 and XF 400: First Look with Steven Pierce of Framework Productions

Canon today announced two new professional and one prosumer-level camcorders capable of recording professional-quality 4K video via an advanced 8.29MP 1-inch 4K CMOS sensor and a 15x optical zoom lens. The Canon XF405 and Canon XF400 are virtually identical; the only difference between the two models is that the XF405 has a 3G-SDI terminal. The Canon Vixia GX10 is similar to the XF400 but without several pro-oriented features.

Designed for Electronic News Gathering, Documentary production and corporate and event videography, the cameras are compact and portable.

Canon XF405 and 400 Key Features:

  • 8.29MP 1-inch 4K UHD CMOS Sensor
  • 15x Optical Zoom Lens (25.5-382.5mm equivalent)
  • 5-axis Optical Image Stabilization
  • 9-blade iris
  • ND filter 1/4, 1/16, 1/64
  • Touch and Face-Detection AF
  • Dual SD Slots
  • Slow/Fast motion recording
  • XF/AVC Codec or MP4 formats
  • 3.5-inch LCD
  • Audio Inputs with Linear PCM 4-Channel Support
  • Detachable Handle
  • FTP Transfer via wired or Wi-Fi

The XF405/400 offer high sensitivity and low noise and a wide DR (800%) gamma, thanks to its 1-inch CMOS sensor. Canon has deployed its latest Dual DIGIC DV 6 image processors to help promote high image quality and glitch-free video.

If you shoot in full HD mode, the 15x optical zoom lens can be digitally doubled to 30x. 5-way Optical Image Stabilization assures smooth handheld footage in low light, and the 9-blade iris should lead to pleasing Bokeh and natural-looking specular highlights. Face detection and Touch AF can be used to change focus while shooting without needing to manually adjust the lens’s focus ring, which many consider a better way to rack-focus. You can see the results on the camera’s flip-out 3.5-inch touch panel LCD, which offers an easily searchable menu design, or on the 0.24-inch electronic viewfinder.

Connectivity includes an HDMI 2.0 Terminal with 4K UHD 60P Output Support, two XLR terminals with Independent Audio Level Control, and 4-channel audio use. The XF405 also has a 3G-SDI terminal while the XF400 does not.

Canon Vixia GX10

The Canon Vixia GX10 is basically an advanced amateur 4K UHD camcorder, with several pro-oriented features removed so it could be offered at a lower price. It is basically the same as the XF400, but does not have a handle; there is no Infrared Mode; it lacks an Ethernet port, so there is no wired-LAN option; it records 2-channel audio only; and it only records MP4 videos. It does not support the XF/AVC Codec.
