Canon EOS 7D Mark II

Canon today introduced the Canon 7D Mark II, the new flagship DSLR in Canon’s APS-sensor lineup. New features include a 20.2MP CMOS sensor, 10fps burst rate, an intervalometer, a new battery, and a top ISO of 16,000 that’s boostable to 51,200.

Key Features:
  • 20.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor
  • Magnesium construction
  • Dust and weather resistant
  • GPS
  • 65 AF points, all cross-type
  • Intervalometer
  • 10fps burst rate
  • 1080p HD video at 60fps
  • 100% coverage optical viewfinder
  • 3-inch, 1040k dot LCD monitor

New Sensor

The Canon EOS 7D Mark II is built on a new 20.2MP sensor that Canon says will deliver stunning detail and impressive clarity. The sensor has a top native ISO of 16,000, and it can be expanded to ISO 51,200 with claimed low noise for both stills and video. The sensor works in tandem with Dual Digic 6 image processors, which help the camera up to 1090 JPEGs, 31 RAW and 19 RAW+JPEG shots in a single burst. The image processing also handles lens aberration, peripheral illumination and distortion correction in real time.

The shutter is ruggedized and designed for 200,000 cycles. Burst rate is up to 10fps, a major increase, while shutter lag is down to 55 milliseconds. An efficient shutter drive motor and vibration dampened mirror is also part of the package. The camera chassis is built of lightweight, rigid magnesium and is sealed against water and dust.

All Cross-Type AF Points

An EOS first: The camera features 65 autofocus points, all cross-type, and boasts accurate subject tracking down to -3 EV sensitivity at the center point. Cross-type AF points are more accurate and stable, and aren’t influenced by subject shape and color. The EOS 7D Mark II’s AF points are spread across a wide area of the frame for faster AF on off-center subjects.

Autofocus is also said to be excellent for video. A new Dual Pixel CMOS AF represents, according to Canon, a milestone in AF speed and accuracy. Traditionally, image sensors have one photodiode per pixel for recording, but the CMOS sensor on the 7D Mark II has two photodiodes per pixel—40 million altogether. Each pixel on the sensor can perform phase-difference detection autofocus and capture light. With phase-difference detection AF, autofocus is achieved quickly and easily, and videographers and users of Live View will see the fast-focus results most clearly. Combined with the predictive power of Movie Servo AF, subjects in motion are smoothly and consistently tracked.

Smart Viewfinder

The Intelligent Viewfinder II makes it easy to both shoot, change and confirm camera settings and shooting modes all without looking away from the viewfinder. Displaying approximately 100% of the composition, the viewfinder can show settings like shooting mode, exposure level, white balance, drive mode, AF operation, metering mode, recording format, even an electronic level and more. All of this information can be displayed by or superimposed easily over the image for review while shooting, and multiple views are customizable.

The 3-inch, 1,040k dot resolution monitor has a resin-coated cover so reflections are minimized. The LCD’s surface is treated with a smudge-resistant coating to minimize fingerprints

Intelligent Subject Recognition

The camera’s iSA Intelligent Subject Analysis system employs an independent RGB light sensor with approximately 150,000-pixel resolution. This sensor enables intelligent Tracking and Recognition system (iTR AF) that detects and tracks subjects, automatically switching the AF point to optimize tracking. New tracking algorithms are tailored to recognize faces and colors.

A new Scene Detection system features a new 150k pixel RGB metering sensor for greater precision.

The Canon EOS 7D Mark II will be available from Adorama body only for $1,799, or bundled with the 18-135mm IS STM lens for $2,149.

Free CamRanger Offer

In addition, Adorama is offering the Canon 7D Mark II bundled with the 18-135mm lens and the CamRanger iOS Remote Camera Controller. The CamRanger works with the camera and iOS and Android apps to enable wireless tethering control of the camera from a mobile device, and creates its own WiFi network. The CamRanger normally costs $299, but is being offered here in a kit with the 7D Mark II and lens for $2,149 so effectively the CamRanger is available for free when you order this kit.

Canon has also announced three new lenses:

Canon PowerShot G7 X

The Canon PowerShot G7 X ($699 at Adorama) is the second generation of Canon’s larger-sensor point-and-shoot line, featuring a new 1-inch 20.2MP CMOS sensor.

Not only does the Canon PowerShot G7 X boast a big 1-inch sensor with a high ISO of 12,800 and 20MP resolution (up from its predecessor’s 14MP), but Canon claims it has greatly improved AF acquisition speed to 0.14 seconds, which is almost instantaneous.

Key Features:
  • 20.2MP CMOS sensor
  • Digic 6 processor
  • Top ISO 12,800
  • 24-100mm (35mm equivalent) f/1.8-2.4 lens
  • Image stabilization
  • Closest focus 2 inches
  • “Selfie-Ready” 3-inch tilting touchpanel LCD monitor, 1040k dot resolution
  • 31 AF points
  • 6.5fps burst rate
  • Wi-Fi, NFC connectivity
  • 1080/60p HD video
  • Intelligent IS with 8 stabilization modes
  • Control ring, exposure and mode dials for manual operation

Canon G7 X vs. Canon G1X

Canon has improved several key features over the previous generation Canon G1X. These include higher resolution (20 vs. 14MP), closer macro focus (2 inches vs. 7.9), maximum aperture (f/1.8-2.4 vs. f/2.8-5.8) and higher LCD monitor resolution (1020k vs. 922k).

Most likely the most obvious new feature is the LCD. The 3-inch touchscreen flips up and over the top of the camera, letting the user shoot selfies. These can be easily uploaded to photo sharing sites via on-board WiFi, which is both Mac and Android-friendly, and NFC technology, which lets you pair with compatible Android devices.

The lens has a 9-blade diaphragm for more rounded and natural-looking bokeh, and a sophisticated Image Stabilization with up to 8 IS modes available, depending on the nature of the camera motion. Video is available in full 1080/60p and is recorded in MP4 format.

Canon has sped up the camera, claiming to have removed buffer time for faster image transfers with less or no hesitation.

Canon PowerShot SX60 HS
Canon PowerShot SX60 HS

65X Optical Zoom, the longest yet?

The Canon PowerShot SX60 HS ($549 at Adorama) sports one of the longest zoom ranges in any digital camera with a 65x optical zoom that covers the 35mm equivalent of 21-1365mm. Not surprisingly, it has Intelligent Optical Image Stabilizer that chooses from 8 different IS modes. It is built around a 16MP CMOS sensor with a Digic 6 Image Processor, which Canon says yields excellent low-light image quality.

The SX60 also captures full 1080/60p HD video in MP4 format; the lens zooms silently and can focus while shooting video footage. For the first time in a Canon camera in this class, there is also an external mic jack.

Autofocus is said to be greatly improved via High Speed AF, and the camera offers 6.4fps burst rate with no buffer delay. Zoom framing Assist tracks and captures moving subjects while using the longer telephoto lengths. The camera zooms out so you can find a moving subject, then zooms in quickly to capture it up close. If you’ve ever tried following a moving subject with a long focal length lens, you know this is a great feature.

The Canon SX60 has built-in Wi-Fi for iOS and Android devices and NFC wireless connectivity for Android devices only. It has a 3-inch, 922k dot LCD monitor as well as a 922k dot resolution eye-level viewfinder.

Canon PowerShot N2

Diminutive digital camera is a social network butterfly

The Canon PowerShot N2, available in Black or White for $299 at Adorama is a tiny 16MP camera with a nearly-square body that folds out via a flip-up 2.8-inch touch panel LCD monitor. Designed for the social networking generation, the N2 has built-in Wi-Fi that lets you quickly share images via Android or iOS mobile devices. (NFC is also available for Android only.)

All of the camera’s features are accessed via the touch-screen, which can be turned to face the photographer for selfies via self-portrait mode. But unlike most smart phone cameras, the N2 can zoom; it has an 8x optical zoom that starts at 28mm, and has an optical image stabilizer with 8 IS modes. The camera packs a Creative Shot mode that uses composition, color and lighting from the original image to create unique, artistic images.

1080p HD video is available, as is an advanced movie shooting feature that automatically combines super slow motion and quick motion with various filters for creative in-camera moviemaking.
