Canon today announced the second-generation versions of both its full-frame and APS-sensor entry-level DSLRs. Each model boasts significant upgrades over its predecessors. The Canon 6D Mark II offers improved resolution, wireless connectivity, better autofocusing, a flip-out touchscreen LCD monitor, and an expanded ISO range. The Canon SL2 offers improved resolution, a touchscreen LCD, improved ISO range, and compatibility with ISO and Android mobile devices.

Canon 6D Mark II

While it is designed as a prosumer camera, the Canon 6D Mark II has enough features to satisfy many working professional photographers as either a primary or secondary camera body. Its closest competitor amongst currently available Canons may be the 5D Mark III, which specs out very similarly to the 6D Mark II on many features (although the 6D has an edge if you want a flip-out touchscreen).

Key features:
  • 26.2MP 35mm CMOS sensor
  • Optical Viewfinder
  • 45-point All Cross-type AF system
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF with phase detection
  • Full HD 60p video
  • ISO range 100-40,000
  • Flip-out 3-inch touchscreen LCD
  • Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth & GPS built in

The Canon EOS 6D Mark II features a 26.2 Megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor (approx. 35.9mm x 24.0mm), capable of high-resolution and detailed images. The ISO range of 100-40,000 is expandable to ISO 50 and 102,400. The EOS 6D Mark II captures images of 6240 x 4160 pixels with a pixel size of 5.67 microns, and a good signal-to-noise ratio, resulting in great images.

The EOS 6D Mark II has a wide-area, 45-point all cross-type AF system which, according to Canon, allows you to track fast subjects accurately throughout the frame. AF is operational in low light down to EV -3. The AF system is backed up by a high-quality bright prism and “Intelligent Viewfinder II” which displays camera settings, with a limited chance of glare so you can easily see and quickly change settings on the spot, even in difficult light. The 6D Mark II also features 5 types of AF area selection modes useful for a number of different AF situations.

The camera also boasts Dual Pixel CMOS AF for Live View shooting. With two photodiodes per pixel capable of phase-difference detection autofocus, Dual Pixel CMOS AF is said to deliver fast and accurate AF throughout the image plane. The system can detect shifts in movement at the pixel level and enables continuous automatic AF and AF tracking that enhances overall camera operation for sharp still images and smooth, accurate focus transitions in movies, even at Full HD 60p. A DIGIC 7 Image Processor is on board for fast operation, even in low light.

The Canon EOS 6D Mark II is the first full-frame Canon EOS DSLR camera to have a Vari-angle Touch Screen 3.0-inch ClearView LCD II monitor, a feature that videographers will find useful. Like the more costly 5D Mark IV the 6D Mark II’s monitor is touch sensitive, so users can easily to select and adjust focus, menu and quick control settings with a touch of a finger. Two-finger touch gestures can be used for zooming or changing images. The 1.04 million dot LCD monitor is constructed to help minimize reflections and treated with a smudge-resistant coating for a bright, clear and easily viewable display.

Canon has deployed wireless technologies for quick workflow in a variety of locations. The 6D Mark II features Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth connectivity, and is compatible with Android devices. The camera can be controlled remotely via mobile device, and images can be easily transferred. The camera is also compatible with the Canon Connect Station CS100 device, which makes it simple for photographers and moviemakers to view and organize all their photos and videos on one connected device.

Bluetooth pairing helps you connect the camera to compatible smart devices using the free Canon Camera Connect app. The Bluetooth capability uses a low-energy connection that can be set to connect automatically upon pairing of the two devices and helps preserve battery life while maintaining a wireless connection.

The camera also boasts built-in GPS, which helps content creators both tag their images with critical location data, and also adjust the time and timestamp on the camera automatically. It’s compatible with American GPS satellites, Russian GLONASS satellites and Japanese quasi-zenith satellites Michibiki.

The EOS 6D Mark II has been tweaked to better capture action. Its shutter, advanced AF and exposure and image processing systems have virtually eliminated lag time, while offering burst rates of up to 6.5 even at full resolution.

The camera’s battery compartment cover, card slot cover, lens mount, terminal covers and buttons are weather-sealed to help keep water and dust out. High precision aluminum alloy and polycarbonate resin construction ensures a lightweight and durable camera that gives you the confidence to use in various situations.

The Canon EOS 6D Mark II will ship in mid-July and will be available at Adorama in several configurations:

Canon Rebel SL2

The diminutive Canon EOS Rebel SL2 offers all of the benefits of traditional DSLR interchangeable-lens photography and through-the-lens viewing in a camera that is not much larger than a typical mirrorless compact camera. Designed with travelers and hobbyists in mind, the camera offers ease of use combined with high quality results thanks to sophisticated under-the-hood features.

The Canon SL1, when it was first introduced over five years ago, was the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR. The SL2 maintains its predecessor’s diminutive dimensions, but bulks up its resolution, from 18 to 24MP, offering an expanded ISO range, and making its 3-inch touchscreen LCD monitor a flip-out variety, for greater flexibility when shooting videos. Video resolution has been boosted to full HD at 60fps.

Key features:
  • 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF with Phase detection
  • Flip-out 3-inch touchscreen LCD
  • Optical viewfinder
  • 9-point AF system
  • ISO range 100-25,600
  • Full HD video at 60p, external mic jack
  • Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth built in

The Canon EOS Rebel SL2 has a 24.2 Megapixel CMOS APS-C sensor that can capture high-resolution images with great quality in a wide variety of lighting situations. Canon claims the camera is capable of faithful captures of dynamic, rich colors from the deepest reds to emerald greens to lush blues and purples. Out of the box the camera is set so non-technical photographers can simply turn the camera on and feel confident that the results will be stunning whether they are being shared with your friends on social media or blown up into poster-sized prints.

Live View with virtually no focus wait time, thanks to Dual Pixel CMOS AF system. Canon says it’s the world’s fastest autofocusing speed at 0.03 sec. Equipped with phase-detection, the camera can quickly and accurately determine how far away a subject is and where the lens should focus, and offers fast, smooth and precise autofocus that stays locked onto your subject, even if they are in motion, for both photos and videos.

The Vari-angle Touch Screen LCD is useful for composing and reviewing your photos. Tap the screen during Live View while taking photos or videos and the EOS Rebel SL2 will quickly lock focus to that location in the image. Touch gestures can be used for zooming in or swiping through images. Menu and quick control settings can be accessed quickly and easily. In addition, the Vari-angle Touch Screen LCD lets users utilize Selfie Mode with a touch of a button so you can capture high-quality selfie shots with ease.

Built-in WiFi lets you exchange data with other Wi-Fi-compatible Canon cameras, and transfer files directly to a compatible smart device using the Camera Connect app. You can also print directly to compatible wireless Canon printers.

With its built-in NFC (Near Field Communication) capability, the camera connects directly to compatible Android devices (sorry, iPhone owners) as well as Canon’s Connect Station CS100 device by simply touching the NFC icon located on the camera to the device.

The SL2 now supports Full HD quality movies at 60p and can produce incredibly smooth moving images for playback, or for sharing videos on social media. There is an external microphone input available for higher-quality sound recording.

The DIGIC 7 Image Processor is said to power the SL2 to produce high image quality and fast operation, even in in low light. When using high ISO settings, the image processing helps keep results sharp and detailed in virtually any lighting situation with minimal noise, claims Canon

Focus is achieved via a 9-point AF system designed to achieve sharp focus in an instant. This sophisticated AF system makes it easy to capture the action, no matter where the subject moves. 63-zone evaluative metering helps the EOS Rebel SL2 achieve optimal exposure with a diverse array of subjects and lighting conditions.

The Feature Assistant function helps users take advantage of the camera’s advanced features and create impressive photos with ease. By explaining and illustrating shooting modes and their effects with sample photos of each mode, Feature Assistant encourages experimentation and provides guidance for creating amazing photographs.

With improvements in design and construction, the EOS Rebel SL2 is portable and lightweight with no compromise in performance.

The Canon EOS Rebel SL2 will be available from Adorama in mid-July. It will be available body only for , or with the Canon 18-55mm f/4-5.6 STM lens for . Pre-orders are being accepted now; credit cards will not be charged until orders are shipped.
