Atomos has just announced a major firmware update for the Ninja V+. When paired with the Canon EOS R5, the Atomos Ninja V+ can now record up to 8K/30p ProRes RAW via HDMI cable. The firmware update also addresses the maximum video recording time limit on the Canon EOS R5.
Atomos Ninja V+ & Canon EOS R5: ProRes RAW Capabilities:
- New firmware update for both Atomos Ninja V+ and Canon EOS R5 will allow for 8K/30p external recording in ProRes RAW format
- Ninja V+ is only monitor/recorder that can capture 8K with the Canon EOS R5
- Bypass Canon EOS R5’s video recording time limits by recording to Ninja V+
- Access to the more robust and detailed ProRes RAW codec
8K ProRes RAW
The ProRes RAW codec from Apple has become a popular choice for filmmakers thanks to all of the sensor information and data it stores. Now, precise color grading and high dynamic range content is possible. With the latest firmware updates from both Atomos and Canon, Canon users can capture footage in the ProRes RAW codec while using their Canon EOS R5. Not only can Canon users capture footage in ProRes RAW, but they can record in 8K/30p with an Atomos Ninja V+ monitor-recorder. The Ninja V+ will use the camera’s sensor to externally record footage to the monitor’s separate SSD. The Ninja V+ is the only monitor-recorder capable of capturing 8K with the Canon EOS R5, so it’s a modest perk for advanced filmmakers.
Overriding the mirrorless recording time limit
Another significant upgrade within the firmware update is the ability to bypass the Canon EOS R5’s video recording time limit. DSLR and mirrorless cameras do not have the same capabilities as camcorders and instead automatically stop continuous recording after a certain duration; in this case, 24 minutes and 59 seconds for the Canon EOS R5. Now, by using the Ninja’s on-screen controls, users can continuously record video externally for an unlimited amount of time — or until media storage is capped. Creators who are capturing lengthy interviews or live-performances no longer need to worry about starting and stopping video recording.
The firmware updates for both the Atomos Ninja V+ and the Canon EOS R5 are now available for free from each respective website.
