Atomos creates products that transform the way digital film and video content are created around the world. The company engineers best-in-class technologies and create products for the next generation of filmmakers. This is with a range of hardware devices for monitoring and recording and intelligent cloud services and devices like the new Atomos Connect and Shogun Connect. It’s clear Atomos also has some other tricks up its sleeve with the announcement of Atomos Cloud Studio at NAB 2022.
Regardless of budget, both devices are viable options for filmmakers and creatives at all levels of production — from small one-man band operations to major studio features. As productions struggle to work efficiently in today’s world, Atomos is taking the necessary steps to make production workflows even more efficient and capable than ever before.
Atomos Connect
For digital or professional cinema cameras, Atomos Connect is an add-on accessory that lets you connect multiple video and network interfaces to your Ninja V and Ninja V+ recording monitors. There is an L-series battery slot and other power options on the back of the monitor, as well as a slim design. AtomX Sync support is now available to sync all your cameras’ timecode, and the monitor offers a 12G-SDI interface and more camera inputs than HDMI. Moreover, Wi-Fi 6 is available for streaming to networked video switches, additional monitors, and cloud destinations thanks to the integrated antennas, Bluetooth LE, and Gigabit Ethernet.
Atomos Shogun Connect
The Atomos Shogun Connect, however, is a completely redesigned monitor from Atomos that is an all-in-one production solution with built-in network capabilities. It retains many features from the original SHOGUN such as HDR support, RAW recording, 7″ display, input and output switching, and DCI 4K support. It also has two 12G-SDI and two HDMI input/output ports. You’ll also find Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, and Gigabit Ethernet networking options, as well as a USB Type-C port. As with the Atomos Connect module accessory, it includes AtomX Sync technology for synchronizing timecode across all of the cameras in your production
Update as of April 30, 2023 – Atomos Cloud Studio
The partnership between Atomos and Frame.io lets producers, editors, colorists, and other post production staff access footage from any location across the world with Atomos Cloud Studio (available starting on April 30th. 2023) Users will be able to start working on a rough cut while you’re still in production. When deadlines are tight, this allows for speedy turnarounds and delivery.
Atomos Connect and Shogun Connect both record a high-resolution hero clip and a proxy clip that is easier on your bandwidth — both with the same file name and timecode. Using Atomos’ progressive file transfer technology, the proxy clips are uploaded to Frame.io in H.265 while they are still being captured.
The Studio is comprised of Atomos Capture to Cloud, Atomos Stream and Atomos Live Production (Beta). With the latest firmware update (AtomOS 10.90), ACS is now available on Atomos CONNECT for Ninja V and Ninja V+, as well as Shogun CONNECT. The Zato CONNECT can support Atomos Capture to Cloud and Atomos Stream (only).
