Dynamic sound and noise cancellation
For its first set of over-the-ear headphones, Apple constructed an impressive design. The AirPods Max are crafted with a 40mm drive to produce rich bass, accurate mid-range frequency, and sharp, clear highs. Notably, the headphones include a dual neodymium ring magnet that keeps distortion below one percent, even at max volume.
The AirPods Max come with a 10-core, H1 audio chip in each ear to deliver Adaptive EQ, Spatial Audio, Noise Cancellation, and Transparency Mode. Adaptive EQ is able to measure the sound signal in each ear and adjust the low and midrange sounds accordingly to provide the best audio experience possible. Further, Spatial Audio enables 5.1, 7.1, and Dolby Atmos listening by tracking head movement and placing sound in the surrounding space.
To achieve excellent noise cancellation, the Apple AirPods Max features four different internal microphones in each ear cup: three outward facing, and one inside. The combination of microphones monitor outside sound coming in and adjusts the noise cancellation settings second by second. If you prefer to hear the environment around you, users can quickly switch to transparency mode that will outside noise in.
Slim, comfortable, and handy design
The physical design of the Apple AirPods Max may be more remarkable than the sound technology. The custom, acoustic design features a knit mesh canopy, stainless steel headband frame, and memory foam ear cup cushions. The memory foam cushions allow for an effective seal around the ears, leading to a more immersive listening experience. The knit mesh canopy and stainless steel headband combine to distribute headphone weight evenly. The AirPods Max can be worn for lengthy amounts of time comfortably.
The on-headphone controls are super convenient. Dubbed “The Digital Crown” after the Apple Watch, the on-headphone controls swifty answer calls, adjust volume, switch tracks, pause or play audio, and summon Siri. Similar to other advanced headphones, the AirPods Max will actually pause the audio if you remove them.
