Today, Apple had its first event of 2022 — titled “Peek Performance” — and it was packed with new products and updates. The announcement included updates to the iPhone SE and iPad Air, and introductions to a new M1 chip, Mac Studio, and Studio Display. Let’s recap what was covered in today’s event, and what we can expect of each new product.
Mac Studio and Studio Display
The new Mac Studio and Studio Display will feature the integrated experience Mac users have come to love. Mac Studio lives on your desk and is only 7.7 inches long and 3.7 inches tall. For most workloads, you’ll barely hear it. It offers four Thunderbolt 4 ports, 10Gb Ethernet port, two USB-A ports, an HDMI, and an audio jack. It also has more connectivity available on the front with two USB-C ports and SD card slot. The Mac Studio can support Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. According to Apple, it can also support up to four Pro Display XDRs and a 4K TV, and up to a whopping 18 streams of 8K proRes 422 video. You can access up to 64GB of unified memory, and make that 128GB when paired with the M1 Ultra chip. The price will start at $1,999. You can also purchase the Mac Studio with the M1 Ultra chip for $3,999.
Studio Display is the all-new monitor with an 27-inch 5k all-screen design. Its slim profile and stand can tilt 30 degrees. There is also a height adjustable stand option, or you can mount it in portrait or landscape mode. It can reach up to 600 nits of brightness, supports P3 wide color and has macOS’s TrueTone feature. The Studio Display also has 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera for video conferencing. The real showstopper is the Studio Display’s high fidelity 6-speaker sound system that can also suppose Spatial Audio. It offers three USB-C ports and thunderbolt port. The price will start at $1,599.
iPads
iPad Air is also getting an upgraded model. It will have the same M1 chip as the iPad Pro. This provides 60% faster performance compared to the previous iPad Air. Its new 16-core neural engine, anti-reflective coding, and 12 megapixel ultra-wide camera, and 5G connectivity only adds to the appeal.
You’ll also find the newest version of iMovie that comes with its own updates (available next month). The iPad Air will be available in the following colors: Space Gray, Starlight, Pink, Purple, and Blue. The price will start at $599, and have 64 and 256GB models.
New M1 Chip
Apple’s event today was also an introduction to the next Apple Silicon chip for Mac desktops: the M1 Ultra Chip. The M1 Ultra will join the lineup which includes the M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max chips. It has a 20-core CPU and 16 high performance core and four high efficiency core, 64 GPU cores, a 32-core Neural Engine for AI processing, and up to 128GB of RAM. The M1 Ultra chip is nearly eight times faster than the M1 chip. This is bound to provide industry-leading desktop performance as the most powerful and capable chip currently available.
AppleTV+
The “Peek Performance” event started with a recap of AppleTV+ and Apple original films such as “Coda” and “The Tragedy of Macbeth”, which have both been nominated for Academy Awards this year. It was also announced that AppleTV+ will now house Friday night baseball for the MLB at the start of its 2022 season.
