In Photoshop, you can add text to any image or graphic you are working with. Photoshop comes with many different fonts already, but some projects may call for fonts that Adobe doesn’t have on Photoshop. Luckily, it is simple to download your own fonts, and upload them to Adobe Photoshop to use on your next project.

Downloading fonts is slightly different for Mac and Windows users, so instructions to install fonts for both are included below. Here’s your step-by-step guide on how to add fonts to Photoshop.

How to Download Fonts for Mac

First, you need to download the font you wish to use to your computer. There are a variety of great websites that have a wide variety of both free and paid fonts that you can download. Once you have the font downloaded, locate the font on your computer.

Once located, double click on the font. This should bring up a preview of the font on your computer. You can click on Install Font, which will automatically install the font on your computer, allowing Photoshop to find the font and use it.

After you’ve installed the font, go back to Photoshop, and select the Type Tool. Click and drag to create a text box, and then choose the font you just downloaded in the top menu bar. Then, you can type and the font you’ve downloaded should be applied!

How to Download Fonts for Windows

Download the font you wish to use in Photoshop. You can go online and find many different free and paid fonts to download. Then, make sure that you locate the font on your system. Right click the font and click Install, which will make it available on not only Photoshop, but also on any other programs on your computer.

Once you’ve installed the font, travel back to Photoshop and select the Type Tool. Click and drag to create a text box, and select the font you’ve just downloaded from the top menu bar. Type whatever you’d like, and you should see that the new font is applied.

Things to Consider When Downloading Fonts

With a wide variety of fonts available on the web, it might seem easy to download many fonts at once and use them freely as you wish. However, most fonts have licenses and, oftentimes, fonts don’t allow you to use them for commercial purposes without paying an additional fee. If you are just using the fonts for your own purpose, you will usually be okay to use most fonts. However, if you are profiting off of the work you are doing with the fonts, you may have to pay extra for the font. If you are looking for fonts for commercial use, there are some websites that specialize in free fonts for both personal and commercial use.
