Sony Announces 2 New Telephoto Lenses: 600mm F4 G Master Prime & FE 200-600mm F/5.6-6.3 G OSS

Sony has just upped the offerings in its growing mirrorless full-frame lineup thanks to today’s announcements of two new lenses: the new super-telephoto 600mm F4 G Master prime lens, and the FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS super-telephoto zoom lens.

Created with sports, wildlife, and news photographers in mind, the new 600mm lens is noted to be Sony’s longest reaching prime, weighs in at 6.71 lbs., and is housed in a lightweight, balanced design that makes for relatively easy portability.

“The tenth model from our flagship G Master series, the new 600mm F4 raises the bar for speed, mobility and control in a super-telephoto prime lens,” says Neal Manowitz, Sony’s deputy president for Imaging and Professional Solutions Americas, in an announcement. “Combining the extensive 600mm reach with features like 20 fps shooting and AF/AE calculations at 60 times per second on the α9 or extremely high resolution, high-speed performance on the α7R III allow professional photographers to create images that were simply not possible to capture before.”

The lens is equipped with two extreme dynamic (XD) linear motors that provide quick and reliable subject tracking and quiet autofocus, as well as new and custom motion algorithms that were created to curb lag and noise. The overall optical design includes one large aperture extreme aspherical (XA) element, and three fluorite elements that help combat issues that often come with large-aperture lenses, including chromatic aberration and color bleeding. One extra-low dispersion (ED) element cuts down on flare and ghosting, and the 11-blade F/4.0 max aperture allows for maximum light and impressive bokeh. A new function ring includes an added PRESET, FUNCTION, and OFF switch for added customization.

The brand’s Nano AR Coating keeps reflections at bay and boosts image quality and contrast, and the fluorine front-element coating keeps the front lens clean and free of fingerprints. The Optical SteadyShot image stabilization includes an improved Mode 3 algorithm for tracking subjects on-the-go. The lens is dust- and moisture-resistant and the lightest in its class, Sony notes, which makes it ready to weather the elements. Pair the lens with the optional 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters for a boost to up to 1200mm focal length, without compromising on image quality.

The Sony FE 600mm F4.0 GM OSS lens is available for preorder for  starting June 13, 2019 at 11AM.

In addition to the 600mm lens, Sony has also launched the brand new 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS lens, created for sports and wildlife photography.

“The new 200-600mm super-telephoto zoom lens gives Sony’s camera users yet another powerful tool to realize their vision,” Manowitz adds. “For wildlife or bird photographers, sports photography enthusiasts and many others, it offers a new level of creative freedom, striking the ultimate balance between performance and portability.”

The lens’ aspherical element and five Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements combine in a new optical design and keep chromatic aberration low, throughout the entire zoom range, and reduce flare and ghosting. And if the versatile zoom range is not enough, it can be further expanded using the 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverters to create an up to 1200mm F13 reach. The built-in Direct Drive Supersonic Wave Motor (DDSSM) keeps your subjects in focus, tracking them with pinpoint — but quiet — precision.

With an internal zoom mechanism, the length of the lens does not change as you zoom in on your subject and scene, giving consistent weight distribution throughout a shoot. You can expect creamy bokeh, thanks to the 11-blade circular aperture, and the built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization keeps images sharp.

The Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS lens is available for preorder for  starting June 13, 2019 at 11AM.
