In recent years, electric scooters have skyrocketed in popularity—and for good reason. Getting an electric scooter is an investment that helps your commute and your wallet. One of the latest and greatest options is the Slidgo X8. Let’s find out what’s helping this new electric scooter glide past competition.
I received the scooter in a pretty big box and my first thought was: “Will I be able to carry this up three flights of stairs?” To my surprise, it was a lot lighter than anticipated. Previous electric scooters that I’ve used weighed at least 35 pounds or more. The Slidgo X8 weighs in at 30 pounds (with battery), which is a great plus. A lightweight build makes it easier on my back when I take it on a train, ride it, and carry it up to my apartment. The scooter comes folded—another element of its compact design—with a strong clip holding the front lever in place. This guarantees easy folding with a sturdy carrying arm that won’t unclasp.
Installing the handlebars is a first step after unboxing this scooter. The handlebars go on either end of the lever and hand-turn into place. Next, you’ll attach the brake with an Allan wrench (included in packaging). Setup was seamless with the included manual, and took less than 10 minutes.
Now, when it comes to electric scooters there are three important questions to consider: How long does the battery last? How fast does it go? How safe is it? I’ll dive into each question below.
My favorite feature of the Slidgo X8 is the removable battery, which you can remove from the scooter and charge separately. If I wanted to purchase another battery, I could pack the spare battery to extend my ride. Plus, I can leave my scooter on the first floor and charge the battery separately in my apartment versus lugging the whole scooter upstairs. The removable battery is a game-changer, and something I wish more electric scooters would implement.
A full charge of the battery lasts anywhere from 18 miles in Sport mode to 22 miles in Eco mode, which is plenty amount of distance in New York. My commute to work is 5.8 miles, so I can easily make it there and back in one charge. Plus, charging is speedy: The battery requires just four hours to charge to 100%.
The Slidgo X8 has three speed modes: Eco, Beginner, and Sport mode. I mostly stayed on Eco to conserve battery life. The LCD display on the scooter tells you which mode you’re using, how fast you’re going, and how much battery you have left. If you’re in a rush or in a safe location, you can try the fast Sport mode to reach up to 19 mph! Rarely do I need that kind of speed, but it’s good to know it’s there if I need it.
With this electric scooter, safety is a priority, and I could feel that from my first time riding it. With front LED lights and a rear LED brake light I felt safe riding at night. There are also two different types of braking: One front electronic ABS hand brake and one foot brake in the back. The tires are also puncture-proof so no need to worry about them getting flat.
Speaking of tires, they’re one of the first things I noticed about the Slidgo X8. The tires are 10 inches thick, and incredibly sturdy—guaranteeing a smooth ride over bumps, rocks, and holes.
Wow, did I feel the wind in my face! Where I live, the roads are quite bumpy, so I was initially surprised by the scooter’s sturdiness across potholes and bumps. With the braking systems, I found myself using the rear brake more because that’s what I remember from scooters growing up. After a bit of practice, I felt safer using the hand brake on the handle and the footbrake together. My stops weren’t immediate and I didn’t feel unbalanced.
The scooter platform has a nice grip texture, which held my feet in place while riding. I don’t recommend riding in the rain for safety (a point also noted in the manual). However, if you were to leave your scooter in the rain it does have a waterproof level of IP54—just be sure to remove the battery.
I really enjoyed the Slidgo X8! There are so many scooters on the market right now, but with key stand-out features like a removable battery and a two-way braking system, this scooter truly goes above and beyond.
