RED, one of the major players in the digital cinema camera market has announced the latest member of their family, the RED RAVEN. Utilizing the RED DRAGON sensor, the RAVEN is capable of shooting up to 120 fps in raw 4K. It can also shoot up to 240 fps at full 2K. The REDCODE RAW (R3D) codec allows shooters to adapt their workflow to their preferred system. Other capture options include Apple ProRes 422, 422 LT or 422 HQ.
The camera itself is pretty light, weighing at just 3.5 lbs, thus making it the smallest addition to the RED line. It’s certainly compact enough for use with various gimbal technologies such as the Movi and drones. According to RED, the dynamic range offers an impressive 16.5 stops (the average cine camera ala the Blackmagic Ursa and Canon C300 Mark II offer up to 15). And the 4K resolution is full 4K: 4090 pixels wide x 2160 across (UHD format maxes out at 3840 x 2160 which is pretty much the average format being shot via 4K prosumer cameras).
The RED RAVEN will be available through three different packages: “The Brain,” “Jetpack” and “Base I/O.” The first option is the body only. The second option includes Red’s trademarked Jetpack Expander, a 7” LCD monitor, outrigger handle, battery belt clip and a 120 GB RED MINI-MAG. And finally the “Base I/O” package is intended for run and gun use and includes a DSMC2 Base I/O Expander and a one year warranty. Prices are $5950, $9750 and $9950 respectively.
The RED RAVEN is only available through RED’s website at the moment. However, if you’re a fan of RED cameras, Adorama offers various bundles and kits through our Rental Center. Just click here for their contact information. You can also take advantage of their Rent To Buy program. It allows you to rent an item for up to 30 days and should you decide to buy it before then, they will refund the full rental amount. It’s a pretty nice deal.
