If the massive 83x optical zoom lens of the Nikon COOLPIX P900 did not give you enough oomph, then it’s time to celebrate, because Nikon’s brand new COOLPIX P1000 boasts an optical zoom that far exceeds its predecessor. With a 125x zoom, the longest superzoom camera currently available, the P1000 is undoubtedly a record setter.

“The COOLPIX P1000 is the first of its kind for a compact digital camera,” said Jay Vannatter, Executive Vice President, Nikon Inc., in a statement. “It raises the bar for superzoom cameras and is a testament to our commitment to delivering innovative tools that offer creative freedom to capture and allow users to share their unique visions of the world.”

The NIKKOR lens, which allows for super-telephoto shooting at a 3,000mm equivalent, starts at f/2.8 and reaches to f/8. According to Nikon, the improved superzoom lens is ideal for “super-telephoto photography, supporting full-scale photography and demonstrating its full power with subjects and scenes that previously could not be captured, including wild birds and celestial bodies.”

Read: Nature and space photographers, this is for you, and Nikon has even included bird watching and moon shooting modes in its dial for those exact purposes.

If you’re looking for more than a 3,000mm option, you can opt to use the Dynamic Fine Zoom and you’ll get the benefit of a 6,000mm equivalent. Dial down the image quality and activate the digital zoom and you’ll get 12,000mm. Yes, you read that correctly.
