Last night, Nikon announced its new NIKKOR Z 40mm lens compatible with full-frame (Nikon FX-format) mirrorless cameras. Key Features of the NIKKOR 40mm Lens:

  • Shallow depth of field of f/2
  • 9-blade iris diaphragm
  • Compatible with FX and DX format Nikon Z series mirrorless cameras
  • Field of view of 60mm on DX-format cameras
  • Custom control ring
  • Fast and silent autofocus

Compatibility and Design

The versatility of the NIKKOR 40mm lens goes unmatched. Its lightweight and compact design is great for on-the-go photographers with a total length of approximately 45.5mm while weighing only 170g.

The focal length of 40mm is perfect for portrait photographers, but versatile enough to capture just about any scene. This is especially true given the focal length can stretch to 60mm (equivalent to 35mm [135mm] format) when mounted on a DX-format camera. Even more so, its dust- and drip-resistant design means nature and wildlife photographers have little to worry about when on the field.

Custom Control Ring

The only way you should shoot is your way. This is possible thanks to the NIKKOR 40mm lens’ custom control ring options. Get ready to completely customize your view for manual focusing, or adjust aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation. Whether you are modifying the settings to fit a portrait, street work, or landscape scene, you will not be disappointed given the endless options to fit your needs.

Beautiful Bokeh Effect

The NIKKOR 40mm lens was made with beautiful bokeh in mind — that’s certainly apparent. It has stellar subject and background separation, as well as a shallow depth of field of f/2 and 9-blade iris diaphragm to to provide a soft, round blur. You can also get up close and personal with your subject given the minimum focus distance of 0.29m.

Lightning-fast and Silent Autofocus

Nikon has adopted a STM (stepping motor) in the NIKKOR 40mm lens to enable lightning-fast and silent autofocus controls. Don’t let the compact body of this lens fool you. Its AF technology is fast and efficient, so you can focus less on focusing and more on composing the perfect shot.

To round up this lens’ many list of features, it has also been created with videographers in mind. Its quiet operation, focus-breathing compensation, and stable exposure present the perfect product for videography projects as well.

The  NIKKOR 40mm lens is now available for preorder at Adorama at the low price of $296.95.
