Nikon Coolpix S810c

The Nikon Coolpix S810c ($346.95 at Adorama) is a refinement of last year’s S800c, which Nikon offers as an alternative to smart phones that offers better image quality. New to this model is an upgraded zoom lens that now reaches to 12x magnification and what Nikon calls Dynamic Zoom, which effectively doubles the focal range by enlarging the pixels. The camera runs on Android 4.2.2, a more recent version of the open-source mobile operating system than its predecessor (4.4 KitKat is the latest upgrade).

Key Features:
  • 16MP CMOS sensor
  • 12x telephoto zoom.
  • Wi-Fi
  • GPS
  • 1080p video
  • Lens-Shift VR
  • 3.7-inch touchscreen LCD
  • Full web browsing and app download abilities

The back of the camera is dominated by a large 3.7-inch touchscreen with 1.2 million dot resolution. While this is a large screen for a digital camera, it is more like the screen size you’d find on a smart phone. In fact, its size makes it more comfortable to use apps, watch videos, and browse the web via the camera’s built-in Wi-Fi connectivity. When you’re out of range of a Wi-Fi® network, you can wirelessly transfer your shots to a compatible smartphone or tablet for instant sharing.

The Nikon S810c will be available from Adorama in Black and White versions.

Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens

Nikon also announced a new version of its long-range all-in-one zoom lens, the Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR ( at Adorama). Designed to be a compact one-lens-does-almost-everything solution for travel photographers, the new version is a bit smaller (and to accommodate its slimmer contours, the maximum aperture at full zoom is 6.3 instead of 5.6). With the APS sensor crop factor, the lens’s 35mm equivalent focal range is 27-450mm. Thanks to its diminutive size and weight it pairs well with the Nikon D3300 and D5300 DSLRs.

Nikon claims the lens’s built-in Vibration Reduction technology provides an additional 4 stops of shake-free hand-held shooting, making it suitable for low-light shooting despite its smaller aperture range. Other features include Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast, almost silent autofocus, three Aspherical and Extra-low Dispersion glass elements to improve contrast and reduce flare and ghosting, and a rounded 7-blade diaphragm for more natural background blur.
