Mirrorless cameras are quickly becoming a huge hit among the photography community. Nikon has seen great success with their Z series cameras, and they have just announced a brand new lens compatible with any Z camera. Meet the NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 lens.

This little lens packs a punch as the smallest, lightest Z prime lens, perfect for street photography. With the 28mm field of view and a minimum focusing distance of 0.63 feet, you’ll be able to capture anything you desire — from portraits to videos to natural snapshots. Let’s review more of the key features about this new Z series lens.

Key Features of the Nikon 28mm Lens:

  • Compatible on any Z series camera (42mm equivalent field of view on DX format cameras)
  • Incredibly close focusing: 0.63 feet from subject
  • Custom control ring: Turn the ring on the lens to control focusing, aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation
  • Fast Autofocus: Dual stepping motors operate in near silence, ideal for video
  • Compact and lightweight design
  • Great in low light situations: Maximum aperture of f/2.8

Nikon has added yet another ultra compact, lightweight lens to their Z series lineup. The 28mm f/2.8 lens will join a variety of other Z series prime lenses. For many street photographers, the 28mm lens will be the perfect field of view for work in the street.

With the compact nature of this lens, you’ll barely even know that it is on your back, or in your hand. It comes with a similar design to the other prime Z series lenses, and can easily swap with another lens to reach a different focal length. With a maximum aperture of f/2.8, you don’t have to worry about shooting in low light situations.

Great on Any Z Series Camera

This lens works great on any Z series camera, with a 42mm equivalent field of view on a DX-format camera. The ultra compact, lightweight lens will feel great behind any Z series camera you choose to put it in front of.

Fast, Quiet, and Close Autofocus

NIKKOR Z lenses use a special stepping motor for smooth and fast autofocus, and the lens suppresses focus breathing to prevent angle-of-view shifts while recording video. This makes these lenses ideal for shooting video. The autofocus also reduces wobbling. With a minimum focusing distance of 0.63 feet from your subject, this lens is perfect for getting up close with your subject. It allows for interesting angles and backgrounds around your subject.

Optimal Lens Build

The NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 lens is an aspherical lens. This means it has a curved, non-spherical surface. This is ideal to reduce aberrations and coma, even at the widest apertures. Less standard spherical elements are needed in this type of lens, allowing for a lighter and more compact design. It comes with Nikon’s Super Integrated Coating, which is the term used for Nikon’s multi-layer coating of the optical elements. This lens is also equipped with an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism, which provides highly accurate electronic diaphragm or aperture blade control when continuously shooting in auto exposure.

Customizable Control Ring

Traditional lenses only have a focus ring. On this lens, you aren’t limited to just focus. Customize the control ring to adjust the aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation. This is going to help improve your efficiency in the field and make sure you get the shot, every time.

Excellent Low Light Performance

Paired with the Z series cameras, which already contain excellent sensors for low light, this lens expands on that low light performance with a maximum aperture of f/2.8. Capture scenes in low light with great sharpness and clarity.

If you’re a run-and-gun type of photographer or videographer who doesn’t want to carry heavy lenses, this Nikon 28mm lens is a great pickup. With it’s great low light performance, amazing autofocusing features, customizable control ring, and perfect 28mm field of view, this is a lens you’ll want to have in your bag at all times!
