Tube lights and spotlights are some of the most utilized fixtures when it comes to creating images in photography and filmmaking. Content creators are constantly on the lookout for lights that are feature rich and easy to control. Where many brands fail in these areas, there’s one name that will always stand out as an innovator: Nanlite. Nanlite understands that there’s a constant need for upgrades and refinements to help creatives improve their work. At CES 2023, Nanlite revealed two such refreshes: the Forza II LED Spotlights and the second generation PavoTube II.

The original PavoTube 15C and 30C quickly found their way into lighting kits around the globe due to their outstanding form and functionality. It has everything consumers love about the original series, but substantially improved upon, with the PavoTube II (15C and 30C).

    What’s New About These Lights?

    PavoTube II

The 15C 2FT LED Light is available for individual purchase, part of a 2-light kit, or a 4-light kit.

The 30C 4FT LED is available for individual purchase, part of a 2-light kit, or a 4-light kit.

If you’re looking for a unique light source with an array of features, then look no further than the PavoTube II 15C and 30C. They measure 2′ and 4′ respectively, and come with incredibly accurate color temperature, 48% better intensity and color, green-magenta tunability by +/- 150, and full control over dimmability from 0-100% in 1% increments. This will give you granular control over the light output. No matter how bright or dim, or the color temperature you choose, the light you see on set will be accurately reflected on your reference monitor.

You’ll find the individual LED diodes are now completely obscured. This allows the fixtures to appear as seamless shafts of light due to improved diffusion. The end caps have been shrunk but the adjustment knobs remain the same. Integrated fastening loops are still built in to the end caps, and a set of steel safety wires are included to make for easy rigging on vertical surfaces.

Improvements in control and connectivity are where the PavoTube II really shines. Both models feature built-in Bluetooth for direct control with the NANLINK app. Also, the built-in 2.4G lets you control the tube with the handheld remote or the Transmitter Box when you have more intricate setups. There’s an AC power input with a locking DMX/RDM port as well as a USB-C port for fast battery charging and firmware updates. The power switch is smaller and recessed more into the fixture to avoid accidental power offs/ons.

Forza 60 II and 60B II

The Forza 60 II and 60B II now come with a locking DMX connector, built-in Bluetooth for direct wireless control with the NANLINK mobile app, a quieter fan, and a 45° Mini Reflector included. There is also a protective case, a Bowens-Mount adaptor, a Battery Grip, and an AC Adapter with a V-Mount plate included. The 60 II has more effects than the original, while the 60B II has the Max Output and Constant Output settings seen on the premium Forza 720B.

Forza 300 II and 300B II

Performance upgrades on the Forza 300 II and Forza 300B II include the Green-Magenta Adjustment, which corrects color when mixed with other light sources. In both versions, the fan speed can be adjusted manually or automatically using Smart mode. There is an integrated power supply as well as side-access V-Mount plates. Bluetooth and 2.4G wireless technology provide wireless control. A Quick-Release Clamp is also included for mounting the control unit.

Forza 500 II and 500B II

The Forza 500 II maintains its compact, lightweight design while adding significant upgrades such as Bluetooth and 2.4G for direct wireless control via the NANLINK app. When blending different light sources, Green-Magenta Adjustment can fix any errors. The Control Unit has been redesigned with side-access V-Mount plates and an integrated power supply. The yoke incorporates a one-sided lock and forward articulation and 360-degree rotation. The Forza 500B II includes all of the features of the 500 II — except that it’s a long-requested bi-color LED spotlight.

    Who Are These Lights For?

    PavoTube II

The PavoTube II is ideal for photographers, filmmakers, and content creators alike thanks to its affordability and compatibility with the NANLINK App. While tube lights can’t be used for everything, they do cover a number of use cases. Paired with something like a spotlight, you’ll have plenty of options at your disposal when lighting a scene or set.

Tube lights can be a very effective solution for quick subject lighting. If you mount the fixture horizontally, you’ll get one type of light shape over your subject whereas if you mount it vertically, you’ll get a different shape. Where most photographers and filmmakers may find it works best is as a kicker or rim light.

Because of the low0profile design, hiding the fixtures is incredibly simple with endless rigging options. The tubes can be hidden under shelves, on top of cabinets, or mounted to walls. What may even make more sense — and what many people use them for — is practical lighting on set. If you find yourself in a darker area of a sound stage or studio, you can mount the light to your cart for added visibility.

Spotlights have been around for ages. They’re excellent for throwing and shaping light in musical performances, filmmaking, still photography, and even actors who have their own home studio setups for headshots and self-tape auditions. Spotlights can be used as your main light source while using dome lights, PavoTubes, or other options to act as rim or hair lights in your scene.

Filmmakers and photographers alike will find that spotlights are a convenient solution for creating soft light that replicates a practical light on your set, such as a lamp. The difference between using something like a soft box is that it generally takes up less space. However, it may also require the light to be bounced for a similar effect. Spotlights can also be harsh, so multiple layers of diffusion may be required to achieve a certain look.

If you find yourself needing to create sun rays coming through a window, a spotlight is a suitable option. Depending on your scene, make sure your color temperature for the light is set properly — daylight or Tungsten. Want to level up your scene? Add some haze to create a dreamy atmosphere that fits the story you want to tell. Many spotlights have slots for gobos which can help create light shapes and textures.

What’s Changed Since the First Generation?

Most of the new features are updates to the original PavoTube. This includes smaller end caps for less on-screen distraction, wider CCT ranges, seamless diffusion, G/M adjustment, Bluetooth and 2.4G for wireless control, and locking DMX ports. An improved battery allows for full recharging approximately one hour faster than the previous generation.

LED Spotlights from the Forza II Series are a second-generation refresh of the original Forza series. Nanlite kept the small form factor, but added a locking DMX port and Bluetooth for wireless control via the NANLINK mobile app. With the exception of the 300 II and 300B II, each model comes with a quieter fan. Moreover, a bi-color version of the 600B II was introduced.

    Final Thoughts

If you’re in the market for some new lights — or looking to upgrade some of your outdated systems — invest in a brand that stands behind their products. The PavoTube II and Forza II LED Spotlights will help get your creative vision to the finish line, effortlessly.

Pre-orders are expected to launch this week with an official release February 1, 2023. Dates are subject to change.
