Who saw this coming? In an unexpected pre-Photokina announcement, Leica has just launched an instant camera. The Leica Sofort bears a striking resemblance to the Fujifilm Instax Mini, but has significant differences: A specially designed Leica lens, snazzy Leica styling, and its own black-and-white film packs in addition to color film.

As one might expect, the Leica Sofort is a premium camera with a premium price, and for that price, Leica promises high-quality low-light shooting, as well as auto, party, people, sport & action, Macro and Creative programs for multiple and time exposures. Self-portrait mode and self-timer are also available, and there’s a small mirror in front of the camera so you can check your pose. A built-in flash can be activated by the user. Focusing distance can be set independently from the selected program mode.

The camera will come in a choice of orange, white or mint colors, to “reflect the light-hearted fun and fascination of instant photography,” according to Leica’s statement.

Leica has also announced a comprehensive range of accessories and consumables. A range of Leica Sofort Straps will be available in matching mint, orange and black & white. Protective cases will be available in black or brown.

Both color and black-and-white films have also been announced. To reflect the nostalgic character of instant photography, the Leica Sofort photos come in warm cream-colored frames. Both films will be available in 10-packs, and the color will also be available in 20-pack boxes.

A range of colorful postcards designed to accommodate a Sofort picture; a Sofort Photo Presenter turns groups of photos into a flat decorative presentation. Photo albums, storage boxes are also being offered.
