The Flashpoint PowerStation PS-800 is a portable supply of power for any electronic device but is suited specifically for the needs of pro photographers using monolight flash units.

Available exclusively at Adorama, the just-announced Flashpoint PowerStation PS-800 ($899.95) is a battery inverter that runs on lithium power and converts it into a steady source of energy so its power flow is similar to that of a standard household current, making it ideal for on-location photo shoots. The fan-cooled unit is powered by a rechargeable and replaceable lithium energy battery and converts lithium energy into pure sine wave 120V AC power.

The emphasis here is on the concept of “steady power.” The problem with many portable power packs that are designed to offer a go-anywhere alternative to Mains wall socket power sources is that they are don’t necessarily provide a steady signal. For photographers, slight fluctuations in power translates into inconsistent lighting results. Flashpoint claims the PowerStation 800 has will offer steady, consistent power to meet the heavy demands of powerful studio flash. The unit does this by using inverters to convert the battery’s DC (direct current) into an AC (alternating current) for devices that need 110V (typical for household outlets).

The Flashpoint PowerStation PS-800 is fan-cooled, has three power outlets so you can run multiple strobes, flexible dual switchable modes (one for traditional power-hungry strobe generators up to 3000ws and the ability to deliver 500 flashes from a 500ws head, and a secondary mode for constant flow to laptops, chargers, and low-power appliances. There are also 3 USB charging ports for smart phones and tablet recharging.

The Flashpoint PowerStation 800 weighs 7.5 pounds and has a 4.85-pound, interchangeable, 12,000m Ah Lithium Ion Phosphate Battery Module. The advantage of making it interchangeable is that you can easily swap out for a fresh unit when supply runs low. Recharge time is said to be three hours. Replacement batteries cost $350 each, and the PS-800 is available in a kit with a spare battery for $1,100.
