Use Mirror Lock-Up for Sharpest Macro Photography

Here’s why a tripod, a cable release, mirror lock-up are requirements for great macro photography

In this special PPSOP video presentation, Adorama’s Bryan Peterson demonstrates why the key to sharp macro photography is to use a tripod, a cable release, mirror lock-up, and a self-timer. He also demonstrates the way-cool Pro Optic Helicoid Macro Zoomer. Learn more about the Macro Zoomer below the video!

Bryan says: First, I want to tell you about a very exciting new product from our friends at Adorama. For years, I have carried around a set of three extension tubes and I was tired of it! So, we put our heads together and came up with the Flashpoint Macro Zoomer! This is an Adorama exclusive. When it comes to macro photography you can use the Macro Zoomer alone with your existing lenses to get in close OR in combination with a macro lens to get in VERY close, like the picture on the bottom left.

When we get in this close, it is critical to be as still as possible and a tripod is a MUST. In addition to that, you need to use mirror lock up mode on the camera if you have it. This is a mode that lets the mirror move up out of the way, but waits before the shutter is fired. See the video below where I explain in depth how mirror lock up works! You’ll want to know because the difference is between the two pictures above right.
