At a press event in New York City today, DJI introduced the all-new Mavic Pro (starting at $749). The foldable drone (that packs up to around the size of a water bottle) features a built-in 4k camera,  3-axis gimbal, and comes in a very portable custom designed shoulder bag. Indeed, portability is at the forefront of the Mavic Pro’s design, as it weighs only about a half as much as DJI’s previous drone, the Phantom 4, and is truly made to be easily taken anywhere.

During the unveiling event, DJI’s PR Manager Michael Perry introduced the Mavic Pro to the audience by pretending to reach for it inside of a backpack placed on the stage. Instead, however, he ended up pulling the neatly folded up drone from his backpocket – at which point members of the audience erupted in applause.

Perry explained that the Mavi Pro is “isnpired by the portability of a smartphone, and we are taking that philosophy to the sky. We want to shorten the time between inspiration and creativity.”  Perry added that essential to the Mavic Pro’s design was “simplicity” and “intuitive use.”

YouTube personality iJustine was also on-hand to demonstrate how she uses the new drone and explained that she lovedthat it fits in her handbag, and was so easy to use.

Thanks to DJI’s new OcuSync transmission technology inside the drone’s pocket-sized remote controller, aerial photographers are capable of up to a 4.3-mile transmission range, HD 720p long range, and Full HD 1080p short range video streaming.  Closely integrated with DJI GO, OcuSync transfers the Mavic’s data in real time.  The OcuSync can also be used to download photos and videos while flying at a maximum speed of up to 40 Mb/s.

The Mavic Pro can see up to 98ft and measure a distance up to 49ft, making it an advanced sonar based avoidance technology. Using a complex network that includes 5 cameras, GPS&GLONASS, a pair of ultrasonic range finders, redundant sensors, and a group of 24 powerful, specialized computers, the Mavic essentially creates a 3D map of the space around it and what to avoid.

According to DJI: “The Mavic Pro camera records true 4K video — four times the size of 1080p — at 30 frames per second and Full HD 1080p at 120 frames per second, so you can create incredible slow motion. Its minimum focusing distance is just 19in (0.5m), making it perfect for everything from the ultimate dronie to once in a lifetime landscapes.”

“The Mavic is the only drone of its size to carry an integrated high-precision 3-axis mechanical camera stabilization system, giving you crystal clear photos and smooth videos, without losing a single pixel.” – DJI

With almost about the same flight time as it’s predecessor, the Phantom 4, the Mavic Pro has a flight time of 21 minutes at regular use, and under controlled settings up to a maximum time of 27 minutes.

Flying the portable Mavic Pro while staying on your subject is as easy as ever with ActiveTrack technology. Thanks to ActiveTrack,  users can select to Trace, Profile or Spotlight their subject.  You can also choose to fly the drone using just your smartphone with the Virtual Joystick, making flying and control the Mavic Pro as easy as a few simple taps on your smartphone screen.

When used with the DJI Goggle the flying experience with the Mavic Pro becomes truly immersive with an impressive display of 85°angle of view for a true bird’s eye view.

For such small package, the Mavic Pro comes with enough advanced features to make this a go-anywhere, shoot virtually anything pro drone.
