On the eve of the opening of the Consumer Electronics Show, Canon has launched a dozen new products, ranging from a new generation of ELPH compact digital cameras to four new Vixia consumer-level camcorders and a new printer.
Compact Still Cameras
Canon has overhauled its consumer compact digital camera lineup with models with five new cameras, with zoom ranges starting at 8x and going up to 50x. All new Canon still cameras are equipped with 20MP sensors.
PowerShot ELPH 180
A 20MP pocket camera with an8x zoom lens and 2.7-inch LCD monitor, the PowerShot ELPH 180 also captures 720p HD video. It features Smart AUTO, which intelligently selects the best settings based on the shooting situation, as well as digital image stabilization, a variety of scene modes such as Fisheye, Toy Camera and Monochrome, and a “Help” button which provides simple explanations so you understand the camera’s settings. It will be available at Adorama in Silver and Red for $199.99.
PowerShot ELPH 190 IS
The PowerShot 190 IS has a 10x optical zoom with Optical Image Stabilization, a 20MP sensor and a 2.7-inch LCD monitor. In addition to stills it can capture 720p HD video. It has built-in Wi-Fi and NFC wireless image transfer, Smart AUTO, which intelligently selects the best settings based on the shooting situation, as well as digital image stabilization, a variety of scene modes such as Fisheye, Toy Camera and Monochrome, and a “Help” button which provides simple explanations so you understand the camera’s settings. It will be available from Adorama in Black, Blue and Red for $159.99.
PowerShot ELPH 360 HS
The PowerShot 360 HS has a built-in 12x optical zoom with Optical Image Stabilization, a 3-inch LCD monitor, Wi-Fi and NFC wireless sharing, and captures up to 1080p full HD video. Other features include Hybrid Auto, which lets you record up to four seconds of video before each image you capture and combines them into a quick video recap of the day, Creative Shot mode, which creates artistic images out of your original image, and Story Highlights, which compiles images and videos into a mini highlight reel with music and effects. It will be available from Adorama for $209.99 in Black and Purple.
PowerShot SX420 IS
The PowerShot SX420 is a compact superzoom digital camera, with a 42x optical zoom lens, optical image stabilization, built-in Wi-Fi and NFC, a 3-inch LCD monitor, a 20MP sensor, and the ability to capture 720p HD video. Features include Smart Auto, which intelligently selects the best camera settings for the current shooting situation, Scene modes including Fisheye, Toy Camera, and Monochrome, and ECO mode to extend battery life. It will be available from Adorama for $299.99 in Blackand Red.
PowerShot SX540 HS
Canon’s flagship superzoom, the SX540 HS offers a 50x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilization, a 20MP sensor, a 3-inch LCD monitor, built-in Wi-Fi and NFC, and the ability to capture full 1080p HD video at 60p with stereo sound. Features include Hybrid Auto, which lets you record up to four seconds of video before each still image then combine the clips for a montage recap, and Story Highlights, which compiles images and videos for a mini highlight reel. The Canon SX540 HS will be available from Adorama for $399.99
Camcorders
Canon today also announced four new camcorders for the consumer market under the Vixia brand:
Vixia HF G40
The HF G40 is a budget-priced camcorder with a 20x HD optical zoom lens and the ability to capture 1080/60p HD video in MP4 format. It has a 3.5-inch LED viewscreen with 10,000:1 contrast ratio and an electronic viewfinder, dual SD card slots, and built-in wi-Fi with FTP transfer. Features include Dual and Relay recording, a wide DR Gamma of 600%, highlight priority mode, view assist functions, focus peaking, slow and fast motion, and optical image stabilization. The camera has full automation as well as manual control, and offers linear PCM audio recording.
Vixia HF R70
The R70 features a 57x zoom lens with a 35mm equivalent range of 32.5-1853mm, and houses Canon’s 3.28MP full HD CMOS sensor to capture 1080/60p footage in both MP4 and AVCHD formats, at 35 and 28 Mbps, respectively. The camcorder can be operated via a tablet or smart phone via Wi-Fi and NFC, has a 3-inch touchscreen LCD, and the ability to record simultaneously in MP4 and AVCHD. Features include advanced Baby Mode, which selects the optimal camcorder settings to help capture baby’s daily growth, live streaming, slow and fast motion, highlight priority, and zoom framing assist.
Vixia HF R72
The R72 is similar to the R70, but also offers 32GB of internal flash memory (which can hold up to 12 hours of video).
Vixia HF R700
The R700 is also similar to the R70, but also includes five cinema-look filter effects that can be applied either during or after shooting, and intelligent IS, which automatically chooses from four modes to optimize image stabilization depending on the kind of shooting conditions.
Printers
Finally, Canon announced a new Selphy digital wireless compact photo printer, the Selphy CP1200. Powered by household or an optional battery pack, the CP1200 is a dye-sublimation printer lets you print wirelessly from your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch via AirPrint and Wi-Fi, using a self-contained ink and paper kit in 13, 36, or 54-print capacities, in print sizes up to 4×6 inches. The 16.8 million color dye set is said to assure optimal print quality, and Canon claims 100 year longevity.
Printer features include a 2.7-inch LCD, portrait image optimization, red-eye correction and smooth skin modes as well as borderless printing and the ability to print passport-sized images. Print pack sizes are 2.1×3.4, 3.9×5.8, 3.5×4.7, and 2.0×2.0 inches. Canon says the printer will deliver a 4×6-inch borderless print in 47 seconds. The Canon Selphy CP1200 will be available from Adorama for $109.99 in Black or White.
