Videographers, broadcasters and post production specialists descended upon NYC’s Jacob Javits center for this year’s CCW convention. And just as I type this article, the expo’s producers have announced the rebranding of CCW (Content and Communications World) as “NAB Show New York,” thus officially tying its east coast event to the big brother that is the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. As for the gear and technology rolled out by various brands associated with the industry, nothing terribly new has been announced beyond the products already on the radar of those who attended CCW. But this did afford the opportunity for many to get up close and personal with the anticipated cameras, lighting equipment and broadcast solutions announced within the past year.
Adorama was also in attendance showcasing the Canon C300 Mark II and Arri Alexa Mini along with Atomos’ series of monitors/recorders. But they were one of many vendors on display. There also appeared a sort of convention within the convention titled SATCON that focused on “next-gen satellite applications” targeting commercial, military and government personnel. So if you walked down one aisle of the hall you would be greeted with an array of satellite dishes and geostationary balloons (one in particular was the size of a studio apartment in Manhattan).
The expo also offered up a “Post Production Campus” which involved a full day of tips and tutorials with regard to editing and workflow.
While Blackmagic Design, Sony, Aja and Panasonic and JVC played show-and-tell with this year’s line of camcorders and cine-cams, Canon unveiled their latest in the XA series ,the XA35. Small, compact, and fairly light, the XA35 utilizes Canon’s HD CMOS PROSensor (which apparently allows for a much sharper image under the lowest of lighting conditions). This could make for an interesting go to option when it comes to in-the-field video shoots and reality programming.
Feel free to check out the photo gallery documenting the first day of an expo formerly known as “CCW.” And we’ll see you next year at NAB Show New York.
