Right on schedule, Canon today made its traditional late-August fall product lineup anouncement. Usually around 25 new products are announced but with the faltering economy in the background we were not surprised that this year’s selection included six new compact digital cameras, three new digital printers, and a single camcorder—just ten new products in all. (While nobody is saying anything official, however, we expect another major announcement soon from Canon.)But the one major change we note with interest is the G11‘s pixel count: It has only 10, while its predecessor, the G10, boasted 14.7. Canon has apparently traded unecessary pixels for what they claim is improved signal processing (which may mean reduced shutter lag) and better image quality in low light at high ISO speeds. Other G11 features include a 28-140mm optical zoom lens, a 2.8-inch swivel LCD, and the usual range of accessories, manual control options, and RAW + JPEG image capture.

Other new cameras introduced by Canon today are:PowerShot S90: Featuring a 10MP system and a 3.8x optical zoom starting at 28mm and f/2, the camera offers a customizable control ring and a 3-inch LCD monitor and packs many features into a small body.PowerShot SX20 and SX120 are Canon’s EVF models, with SLR-like shapes but built-in zoom lenses and electronic viewfinders. The 12MP SX20 is the superzoom camera with a 20x optical zoom lens, 2.5-inch rotating LCD monitor, optical image stabilization, and 720p HD capture at 30 fps. The SX120 is similar in shape but has more modest specs—10MP, 10x optical zoom, and a 3-inch fixed-position LCD monitor. Both models use AA batteries.Rounding out the selection are the compact, 12MP PowerShot SD980 and SD940 Digital ELPH cameras. The SD980 is Canon’s first touch-screen camera, via the 3-inch LCD monitor, has a 5x optical zoom that starts at 24mm, is packed with cutting-edge features and comes in four colors. The SD940 has a 4x zoom that starts at 28mm, a 2.7-inch LCD monitor, and four colors. Both cameras capture HD videos at 720p.The G11 will cost $499.99. The S90 will have a price of $429.99. The SD980 will cost $329.99. All three cameras will be available in October. The SX20 ($399.99), SX120 ($249.99), and SD940 IS ($299.99) will be available in September.
