Powershot ELPH 510/310: Long zooms in small cameras

The Canon Powershot ELPH 510 replaces the 500 HS with the same 12MP, ½.3-inch CMOS sensor, and 3.2-inch touchscreen LCD. New are 1080p HD video and Smart Auto exposure. The 12x zoom covers 28-336mm (35mm equivalent), the longest-ranging Elph to date. The 310 is virtually the same, but the lens is a more modest 8x zoom.

The Canon PowerShot 510 and 310 will be available in October for $349 and $259 respectively, but can be pre-ordered now at Adorama; credit cards will not be charged until the order is shipped. The 510 will be available in Red, Black, and Silver. The 310 will be available in Blue, Green, Pink, Purple, and Silver.

Canon SX150 IS: 14MP 12x zoom compact

The slightly larger but still compact PowerShot SX150 IS has a 12x optical zoom that starts at 28mm, a 14MP CCD sensor, records 720p HD video, has a 3-inch LCD, and offers manual shooting capabilities as well as full auto. A discreet shooting mode is said to “help ensure a low disturbance when capturing photos.” The camera is expected in September for $249, but can be pre-ordered now in either Red or Black.
